Show THE GREAT MOMENT 10 A.M. SATURDAY The controversy between the coal miners, headed by John L. Lewis and the President of the United States who represents the American people struggling for the continuance of the freedom that has been the pride of our country and for which many men have given their lives, both in previous wars and in the present one, is nearing the time appointed for action. That time is set for 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. The President has ordered the men back to work at that moment. If they do not return it will be necessary for United States troops to be called out to protect prop-ery prop-ery and lives and to assure to law-abiding miners the privilege to work. It may be necessary also for the United States to take complete contrlo of the mines. This thing is a disgrace, in our opinion, especially, under the present international trouble we are having. hav-ing. Men and women, yes and children the country over : have, during the past three weeks, been throwing a steady stream of money into the treasury with the hope that it will buy tanks, ships, guns, ammunition and bombs for use of the soldier boys in defending civilization the world over against the selfishness of powrer designing rulers. Brothers, husbands, fathers, sons and sweethearts of these bond buyers are giving their all to preserve the ideals of liberty. When wTe say giving their all we mean just that -they are deprived of the normal wray of life, they have left their loved ones with the possibility of never returning as is the case of thousands of them already, they run the risk of being taken prisoners and tortured by their cruel captors or they may be maimed for life. When the production of coal, so vital to the manufacturing manu-facturing of the implements of war, is stopped it simply throws an added danger for the boys at the front. We are of the opinion of many townspeople when they express the thought that the man responsible, respon-sible, namely John L. Lewis, should be tried for treason and sabotage, and the men who obey his orders by leaving their work should at once be mustered into the army and sent to the front line trenches without the formality of a physical examination or mental test. |
