Show At Rest. The Sanpete Valley road has gone the way of all tilings terrestrial. Ecr since the advent of the Rio Grande Western, Wes-tern, the Siiieto Valley na-. beeu struggling strug-gling for txislance, wi.ii but Lttlo hope under present existing circumstances, of succeeding. Last Friday the end came; the engine was run into shed, the doors locked, the hands discharged, and wo wish we could add, paid off. The Sanpete Valley, while it may not be one of the important roads of the country, has done considerable good in its time. It was built in 1SS2, for the purpose of freighting coal from Wales, and the expectation was that large dividends divi-dends would Dow into the pockets of the stockholders. Simon Bamberger wa3 the projector of the schenle, aud English Eng-lish capital made the venture possible. The English company have a mortgage for $S0,000 on the road, aud as the business busi-ness would not pay the running expenses, ex-penses, the company has beeu getting deepsr in debt for years. Four years ago, Theodore Bruback became be-came president, and that gentleman has tried, so far unsuccessfully, to obtain money to extend the line, well knowing that this was the only hope for putting the road on a souud financial basis. He had almost succeeded iu this plan wiiea the Union Pacific Railway obtained an option on the road and it seemed as if at last something would be done. This scheme also fell through, as Mr. Adams was replaced, aud Jay Gould believed in retrenchment. The road bed has been neglected so that it was dangerous to run trains during the winter season. Following is the result of an iuter: view by a Herald Correspondent: President Brubeek acknowledged that the road had closed, but thought that arrangements would te made to open it up in the spring. ''It has not beeu a paying investment since the start," he said, "and has had a hand to mouth existence and cannot ba made to pay until it i3 extended down to S:in Pete valley," "Will the read be placed iu the hands ; of a receiver?" asked the reporter. "No legal proceedings have been taken as yet." "IV ho are heaviest local creditors?" "Iam the largest, and if anjone should take the mutative in the matter, it should be me," "What action will be taken?" "I presume we will close the old mortgage and then reorganize the company com-pany and extend the road." |
