Show CHURCHMAN URGES FREE enterprise dr joseph F Al men errill ill in addressing members of the lat ter day saints church at general conference friday said that free enterprise and personal liberty are in serious jeopardy in the united states and the elections of 1950 and 1952 will determine whether the country remains free or comes under domination of those who would establish the so called welfare state dr merrill declared these elections will be the most critical in many years and it behooves the people to make an unprejudiced study of the issues involved and vote for those who will uphold constitution ed government dr merrill deplored the fact that certain powerful forces are now setting out to defeat those supporting the taft hartley act he said their success would bring about a welfare state a destruction of personal liberty and free enterprise the speaker said that in the minds of many working people the taft hartley act is oppressive but he wondered how many actually have read the law and understand it his view was that the law imposes equal rights and responsibilities ties on both employers and employed emp loyes and he asked what fair minded citizen would have any other kind of law dr Al merrill errill denounced unjustifiable and insatiable selfishness fish ness and what he said is a growing desire on the part of many people to get more and more or less and less As an example of what he called the gamme craze he cited demands being made on certain big corporations for corpora tion financed pension plans in the last analysis the cost of these would be paid for by the public he said the speaker said in his opinion a pension plan paid entirely by the employer is wrong in principle and bad for the employed himself he agreed with those who consider it fair for each side employer and employed to pay half the cost of such plans dr Al merrill errill warned his listeners that certain labor leaders have the country by the throat and unless their power po w er is limited the country will be under their domination he said the elections next year and in 1952 will decide whether the country will have freedom or be controlled by a group of misguided bosses doctrines of the church require the members to stand for the divinely inspired constitution and this includes the duty to study the issues of an election and vote for those who will live up to their oaths of office and support the constitution ution |
