Show WE TAKE A LOOK AT NORTH CAROLINA an article covering the recent visit to north carolina by members of the national editorial association pinehurst Pinc hurst N C golf capital of the world located at southern pines pine one he most beautiful settings imaginable such was the spot chosen for the ard annual convention of the I 1 national editorial association during may at which some publishers from throughout america wore were in attendance after a trip that took us from the vast across the plains of the middle west and into chicago thence through ohio indiana pennsylvania virginia with a short stop at washington D C we traveled on the seaboard railroad to southern pines and from there we were taken the six miles to the carolina hotel at pinehurst hinsh where the NEA convention was held for three days we visit columbia S C following the convention on may 8 by prior arrangement we worked in a side trip to columbia S C for an overnight over night visit with the douglas K kies doug as some here in utah will remember was a public relations officer at kearns during the past war and he spent many week ends in kaysville Kays ville the columbia trip was not on the NEA itinerary and we were lucky indeed to see this beautiful city if only for a short time golumbia do columbia lumbia is the state capital of south carolina and all state and many federal offices and institutions are located in this city of some persons we were surprised to learn that there are arc churches here five universities and colleges the state mental hospital prison and reform schools are also located in columbia we were told that one person out of six is colored and in the recent primary election held in the city only 33 35 out of S registered colored voters went to the polls start of the tour doug returned us to pinehurst sunday in time to catch our bus i 1 te e NEA caravan which was to start a tour of the state of north wd 0 ad S ien 37 passenger er buses transported the editors on the tour of north carolina t olina seven PT 37 passenger luses were used in transporting the mrs on a tour of the state which put us into raleigh late sunday ernson soon r after bouc arrival in Rc Pv leigh the capital of north carolina i re taken to the governors governor 3 mansion and a reception given by mor and mrs airs it gregg cherry who were most hospitable hosts hen back to our hotel the sir walter for our first night in i aday may 10 saw us on our way for a three hour ride to camp 0 o a U S marine base oil oa onslow bay on the atlantic ocean u io had north carolina publishers as gules and commentators uw us the points of interest as we traveled across the country asto 11 our bus were mr air and mrs airs B arp lowrance of charlotte and no sf where e re would one find two more gracious and congenial oe ne pla the visit to camp lejeune F oni om raleigh we traveled U S highway 70 through smithfield boldi doro and kinston and then south on 2 is to jacksonville Jack sonvill and camp lejeune lajeune upon our arrival we were taken to the marine mess hall A portion odthe group of editors as they enjoyed a lunch at camp lejeune for lunch following which we again took to our buses for the short MP to the beach to watch the second marine division stage a landing demonstration from ships anchored some distance from shore 1000 troops embarked in smaller craft for the landing on a hostile shore the demonstration was most realistic and brought home to those wine sing the event just how the U S marines gained their victories during the pat war in the pacific in addition to the ground forces at 00 10 scene at camp lejeune as troops of the second marine division staged an attack on onslow crislow beach wave after wave ave of marine corsair planes gave air support to landing the performance of this branch of uncle sams gave ave ii us the feeling that we still can say the situation is t still n hand more about north carolina next week |
