Show V Citizen Involvement I r Is Key Ivey to Planning 1 By LEE HARLAN This is the third In a series of articles about the planning program In land use planning of the Central Utah District Office The key to an effective planning planning plan plan- planning ning program Is citizen Involve involve- ment One service we provide to all municipalities In the six county area Is the opportunity to express their views through a questionnaire distributed to all residents of the specific municipality Three questions are asked 1 What do you like about your community What has at attracted attracted at- at attracted you to your jour community or kept you here 1 If this has always been your home 2 Even though you jOU like Uke your community what do you think could be Improved 3 How can you have what you want and change what you dont don't want It is our firm belief that the success of a community Is much like Uke the success of an ual It has been said that all successful people have two common attributes their po positive positive pos pos- attitude The major difference difference dif dif- ference ferenc with a community is the fact that more than one individual is Involved It therefore therefore there there- f fore becomes important that a al l community is unified In terms of what it wants for the fu future future future fu- fu ture and then sets up a plan of action to carry out these common goals It is felt byus byus by byus us that these goals should havethe have havethe havethe the support of a majority of its residence if they are to be carried out Some of the larger municipalities may take the op option option option op- op tion to organize committees and come comE- up with a set of ot common goals This was done here in Richfield but there Is still a strong need to hear from more Richfield residents This was one reason that these reports were published There was some response to the articles but more is needed Once common community goals can be established in each municipality it will be possible to develop comprehensive plans for these communities along with the six county comprehensive sive plan which will concentrate on the unincorporated areas of each of the six counties The benefits of this type of planning program to the local municipalities muNci- muNci depend to a large extent extent ex extent ex- ex tent on the amount of concern and local participation of those municipalities Any municipalities municipal municIpal- wishing to set up committees committees committees commit commit- tees to set goals can receive assistance from our office in doing so We are also asking these communities to do a land use inventory and population inventory to assist us In de developing developing de- de developing these comprehensive plans Needless to say the more Involvement there is locally the more successful that community community community com com- will be in planning for its future Success has been defined as the pr progressive realization ofa of ofa ofa a worthwhile predetermined goal Are we realizing our goals Abraham Lincoln realized realized realized real real- his He lost every election election election elec elec- tion he ran until he was elected president of the United States Why He had that positive at at- at When Babe Ruth broke the record for the most home runs he also struck out more often than any other player He really had to believe he could hit home runs after striking striking striking king out so often In your community community community com com- you may not reach your goals right away but dont don't give up If you believe in that goal it Is worth pursuing Do you believe in your community's community's community's com com- future If so do something something something some some- thing about It Ask us what you youcan youcan youcan can do We will wU be glad to help Our phone number is or Just drop in and see us on the second floor of the post office rooms and Next week we will discuss planning Implementation |
