J i iJ J J l r 5 ILi 4 1 C r rW k f W 4 t t s 41 Tye x 3 a at J t t Y JJ I Ia 4 a 4 a r n v s 7 wt c III S K r rM Y R y S' S r j 4 k 1 MICHIKO center from Tokyo Ariz and Jana Rae Warren second atten atten- attendant Japan reigns as BYUs BYU's new Homecoming dant from Spanish Fork Royalty was dS announced an an- o Queen She is flanked by Ruth Ann Brown today following student elections II right first attendant from Window Rock last week Graduate Named I BYU Homecoming Queen Michiko a 22 old year senior from Tokyo L Japan was announced Monday as Homecoming Queen at Brigham Young University The queen and her two attendants at atI attendants attendants at- at I Ruth Ann Brown a Navajo Indian from Window Rock Arizona and Jana Rae Warren a senior from Spanish Fork will reign during Homecoming Homecoming Homecoming Home Home- coming activities Oct 9 In announcing the royalty Homecoming officials said to their knowledge this is the first time in the history of B BYU YU that a Homecoming queen and andi i her attendants have represented I such a wide cross section of countries and peoples The Thea a royalty is symbolic of the B BYU YU student body which represents 4 more than 70 countries they said Miss daughter of Mr and said she called her mother in Japan after being named queen We Ve dont don't have homecoming queens In Japan so my mother didn't even know what I was talking about the new queen said I III told her to go to Church and ask the American missionaries missionaries missionaries mission mission- aries what it was Miss was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Latter day day Saints in 1965 and she came to the United States later to finish her high school training In ManU Mantl Man Man- tl U Utah She came to the United States with Marilyn Miller daughter of Mr and Mrs Clement Miller Miller Mil Mil- liller lil- lil ler who served an mission in Japan They met in the i North orth Tokyo Branch Miss l lived one year with the Clement Millers and attended and graduated graduated graduated grad grad- from Manti ManU High School in 1967 She considers ManU Manti her second home as she was treated treated treated treat treat- ed so well by everyone here Clement Miller was honored to be the queens queen's escort across the stage between rows of ROTC men in uniform to the queens queen's throne After the queen was seated Mrs Miller presented her with a large bouquet of red roses and an affectionate kiss I 1 have been here so long that I f feel l like Im I'm 50 per oer cent u American already the soft spoken and sincere new queen said She will graduate from B BYU YU YUin in December with a degree in modern dance and she then hopes to teach and pursue a masters master's degree in dance at San Diego State College In San Diego Calif Ultimately I want to return to Japan to teach dance she said We dont don't have modern dance over there and it would be neat if I could pioneer in that field In Japan It is a great honor to be selected Homecoming Queen of BYU and I hope to represent the school as best I can Miss said Im a little frightened because of the re responsibility responsibility responsibility re- re and Ill I'll probably stay up nights practicing what I am going to say so that I cando cando can cando do a good job of representing BYU B YU The new queen toured Europe last summer as a member of the B BYU YU International Folk Dancers She Is a member of and enjoys modern dance ballet folk dancing singing guitar playing and piano Miss was lead dancer In the Mormon Festival of Arts at BYU I R 1 feel teel that dancing has much to offer to our li lives ves It opens up our appreciation and reali realization for beauty and Joy of living she stated My intention Is to use this dancing talent for missionary missionary missionary mis mis- work in the Mormon Church she added |
