in a while is a od thing but when it starts Olio t. t get out of then it might 01 best to back up a step and Pee ke a fresh look in order to tole le fd nd d a reasonable solution Q 0 During the past few weeks Jj e main topic of discussion b 8 the ManU Manti Ephraim j j pg g areas is the proposed land landle 1 tile Je le for a housing development there liere re are groups of avid pro- pro f 5 and opponents trying to lake ake ke their positions known on tej e matter H j From rom the very outset of this hole le matter we have mainlined main maln- lined ned a status of complete completer r in this matter be- be douse fuse r we could see so much jod od d on both sides sides sides' of the fence j Although we have tried tomain to main ain neutral in the mat- mat r we have never the less lored every possible facet Mine the project to try and garr gar- gar t r all the facts possible This is been quite difficult N ow this week weep we have been n with letters sup- sup both sides of the ar ar- ar We have been stopped j Ithe the street and often orten chided r our not taking a stand on ons ills ls s matter We have been ac- ac j ed d of not printing the facts iID would like to say to all of ese critics that I am not satisfied that I know that there is to know about ll lift J Pr project but I believe that nam flam m as well informed as most them are And on both sides the matter too Sin n the newspaper business lithe editor is not an expert Pert in I things He must sit back Ii iff d listen to those who have ored lored the matters and have ade de a complete study of the ther r cation at hand Then the edi- edi i 41 can either write an artor arti arti- i or or can prevail upon the real PErt to make all the facts 1 1 lable in a written article r publication his has been our course of Pinon in this matter Several jb Months ago when this issue its sr beginning to boil boll as the py council was preparing to 11 the land it was asked that article be submitted for pub pub- lr uon outlining the plans ch ich h Walter Nickel the man in developing the had if he obtained land J ir ir penned a note Iff LII to Mr Nickel to get from him hima a concise statement on what was being planned He received a reply but Mr felt feU that if anything was to be said about the matter It should come from the Manti City Council Mr Nickel in his letter outlined outlined outlined out out- lined what he hoped to do If he gained the property But all of these things would hinge hingeon on a survey to be conducted by a team of engineers Mr Nickel Nickel and and Mr both readily admitted that they did not know if it would even be feasible to build homes on the land They did not want to tomake tomake tomake make promises as to what they were going to do until they found out if it be done Last week Mr In Inquired inquired inquired in- in as to the possibility of writing an open letter to the paper Because of our American Ameri Ameri- can way of life which permits us to make maxe our opinions known through the printed media we consented And the article was included on the front page of last weeks week's paper Mr has been in involved involved involved in- in in this transaction since it was first proposed over a year ago We felt feU that if anone anyone anyone any any- one would know the facts on his side of the fence it would surely be Bill And now the other side of the argument which I believe from the comments we hear holds about as much support as does Mr Nickels Nickel's group Too often we hear that all this aggregate of citizens wants is to keep the hill for the production production production pro pro- of the Mormon Miracle Miracle Miracle Mir Mir- acle production This statement statement statement state state- ment is not true according to what they have told me Another thing which about 90 of those whom we talk to are not even the slightest bit aware of is that this body of residents has been working for fora a couple of years on a prospectus prospectus prospectus pros pros- which calls for some pretty marvelous things to happen happen happen hap hap- pen on that hill Wll if It could be realized And these developments developments developments devel devel- would probably mean about as much to the area as the housing development This group is working diligently diligently diligently dili dili- gently to develop the hill with cultural finesse They wish to include a school for the arts amphitheater and historical park Another argument put forth by those protesting the sale of this ground is that they feel that a housing area located east of the temple would marthe mar marthe marthe the beauty of that white temple which annually draws thousands of tourists to this area They cite that this is the only temple temple temple tem tem- In the entire church that has survived the encroachment of civilization and remains In Inthe Inthe Inthe the same setting as when it was built About Thanksgiving time this group of persons from Manti l and Ephraim penned a letter to Mr Nickel pledging their support support support sup sup- port to him in his plan to bring new housing and residents into this area Their only request was to reconsider the use of the land east of the temple in favor of other areas to the south and east of Manti Mantl The thing that I cant can't understand understand understand under under- stand is that throughout this entire controversy many persons persons persons per per- sons have accused the other side who protests the selling of the land of the fact that they want to prohibit new residents residents residents res res- from migrating to this area In all my conversations with both sides not once have I heard anyone say that they wanted to prohibit new blood from entering this valley On the contrary everyone has been unanimous in their support of multiplying our population Another claim which bothers me is that if the housing project project project pro pro- goes through only the fi finest finest finest fi- fi nest people will be permitted permitted permitted per per- to purchase living area With the laws of this land to today today today to- to day it is rather difficult to say just who is going to live in a ahome ahome ahome home once it is placed up for sale Another tidbit that I garner from many of the informed citizenry is that if the housing plans materialize we will im immediately immediately immediately im- im mediately grow any where from fan families lies and on down In talking to Mr and asking him to give an esti esti- mate he simply grinned and said that he didn't know but felt that the count was a abit abit abit bit exaggerated He said that he couldn't even hazard a guess as to what could happen When I talk to some of the city fathers they tell me that if the land is sold that they intend to sign an iron-clad iron contract contract contract con con- tract with the new owners which will require Mr Nickel to build homes on the ground or the ownership would revert back to the city He will also be forced to find solutions to such gigantic problems ms as how to get water to the ground the installation of a sewer system for the area building roads etc This the council says also must be done to the city's complete satisfaction I As the matter stands today the feelings are becoming more hostile each day on the part of many of the local residents In fact some are getting to the point where civil war could break out A satisfactory solution might be reached if both groups could understand the others other's position and program To be able to do this each must have facts and figures on their project Since both parties are trying to ac accomplish accomplish accomplish ac- ac splendid goals it seems that each should only be beable beable beable able to contribute to the other A cultural center needs peo peo- pIe and people need the growth such a school could bring One U thing ng has really become apparent to me in this whole controversy and that is if the residents of Ephraim Sterling and Manti ManU would stick together we could lick the whole world As for this controversy we weare weare weare are now writing the traditional 30 on this story which Is the newspaperman's way of saying this Is the end There are some politicians who shake your hand before an election and your confidence after We lost a big friend last Thursday And to add insult to Injury we made her lose losea a few pounds before we said goodbye The pal that we are talking about was our ton 11 newspaper newspaper newspaper news news- paper press whom we named Millie After she shed the necessary poundage to enable her to slip through our back door Max Cox and Kenny Bown hooked a chain around her wide waist and gave ave her a good yank and she gave way and headed for the door Prior to this we gave her hera a few blows to remember Manti Man Man- ti by Millie is now making her home in a bit warmer climate down in Kanab She was a good and faithful servant and we hope that she will perform the same for her new master In a very few weeks now we hope to have our offset press installed along with a myriad of other gadgets so that we can again starting printing our papers in good old Sanpete A sitter baby-sitter is a teenager teenager teenager teen teen- ager who comes in to act like an adult while the adults go out to act like teenagers Several weeks ago I mentioned mentioned mentioned men men- that it isn't too often that we in these small small- areas areas' have anyone elected to the helm of statewide org organizations We pointed out that this had happened this year with the election of Ned Madsen as the president of the Utah Cattlemen's Cattlemen's Cattlemen's Cattle Cattle- mens men's Association Now we will have to add a apost apost apost post script to this because we have another celebrity in inthis inthis inthis this area A couple of weeks back the of the state picked picked picked pick pick- ed Lee R R. R Barton to head their unit for the coming year This is a well-deserved well honor for a working hard-working man Since our comments about Ned were published we have heard of a number of local residents who hold down jobs with state organizations and even national groups So we had better offer one big hearty congratulations to the whole gang A bore is somebody who goes on talking while youre you're interrupting The basketball season is be beginning beginning beginning be- be ginning to look pretty good thus far in the Manti ManU High School and Snow College locker rooms Our good friend Wes Vies Cherry Cherryin in his annual prognostication of the basketball fortunes of the Region Seven picked picked picked pick pick- ed the to grab all the marbles in this region He predicted that the North Sanpete Sanpete Sanpete San San- pete Hawks would be right be behind behind behind be- be hind the Next in inthe inthe inthe the Cherry up line-up was the Gunnison Bulldogs followed by Juab and Wasatch Academy After Mantis Manti's narrow loss to the Hawks Wes questioned the validity of his rankings and wondered If Manti ManU was a couple of notches too high He said that he had been fed his basketball dope by a couple of guys who turned out to be loyal Lindsay Carlisle Carlisle Carlisle Car Car- lisle and Glen Allred Since then the have redeemed themselves and are coming strong They were rated sixth In the state this week The Snow College Badgers are another well-coached well ball club This Is evidenced by the way that they have been pulling out their ball games They only lost to the College of Southern Idaho by two points In looking over Coach Mike Gardners Gardner's style of play I can see that he is a graduate of good old Davis High School ills His offense in maJy cases is very similar to that employed by Coach Grant Cullimore while I was a student at the Davis institution of learning It won ball games for the Darts way back then too in fact one state championship and a near miss She wont won't mend his socks because he wont won't buy her a anew anew anew new mink coat If he doesn't give a wrap she doesn't give a darn |
