Show Missionary Writes From Texas Elder Don E E. Strobel has written to thank the editor for the Messenger Messen Messen- ger which he says has become my weekly ambassador from home Elder Strobel l tells of his activities in the mission field as follows For the past seven months L 1 have been working in Crystal City Texas It is located about fifty miles from the Mexican border thus it is easy to understand why the population here is 95 per cent Latin However almost 95 per cent of the commerce is supervised by the Anglo population It would be reasonable to think that the race which we work with are of humble circumstances and generally this is the rule It is very interesting to note that most of those who have applied themselves themselves themselves them them- selves to American customs and the English language have a fe few v more of the worlds world's possessions than those who have not cared to trade convenience for tradition To some extent racialism is ev evident evident evident ev- ev ident here but within the short time I have been here I have been able to observe progress to toward toward to- to to-I to ward ultimate oblivion of this sore spot in our modern times Only several years ago students were permitted to attend the same school now all colors defend their school on the gridiron and on the basketball court and the remaining I student body is mixed and all try with equal diligence to cheer the team to victory Because of the working conditions conditions conditions condi condi- here the Spanish-American Spanish people are forced to travel into the North-Central North U. U S. S to obtain work each summer Thus many children are withdrawn from school and many acquire a dislike for school due to the hectic schedule that they are forced to follow Concerning religion I would like lik to say to the people at home who haven't had the opportunity of in investigating investigating investigating in- in hand first-hand the attitudes of others in their attempts to ex explain explain explain ex- ex plain God and his relation to man you dont don't know what you have missed The people receive us well in their homes and are most generous with their time I have I Ionly only had the misfortune of havin having I the door shut in my face twice I However I must say these people are experts in the art of making excuses They range from the standard when the little girl comes to the door and sheepishly says My Mother is not here or I dont don't live here I live over yonder There are arc few homes which will not permit us to enter Something v vel very e r y embarrassing g happened to me the other day We entered a home by mistake where very little Spanish was spoken I Iwas Iwas Iwas was forced to present the message in English and to my surprise I Iwas Iwas Iwas was unable able to do it The message sounded odd and my speech was broken u which added to the sion When conversing about the gospel Spanish is my preferred language Elder Don E E.
