Show LE WE VVE THE jackrabbits ALONE new highway plans ol 01 the state road commission were revealed the other day by ezra C knowlton chief engineer he ile decla two new highways which will rece receive major attention are one which branches oft off U S 91 at santaquin San and runs southwesterly to ely nevada continued on back page HIGHWAY CONTINUED and another which runs west from cedar city to central california both of these routes would un be valuable additions to the state states s highway network and ac cording to mr air knowlton are of stra begic military alue also two points concerning these projects are worth considering horev er first t it be better bet ter to put the heavily traveled high ways we now have in first class con before starting construction on supplementary routes which are not vitally necessary in order to pro vide a satisfactory connection with the areas served second it if they are to built as military roads we re also getting a little ahead of bursel ves because as yet u we e haven t any thing in the way of a motorized ar my to move over them the telegram does not oppose new highway construction and expansion of our road network in utah far from it but with limited funds available it seems to us that our primary concern should not be the construction of more tine fine arteries over the sagebrush and desert but rather widening and straightening of our heavily traveled congested ai teries such as U S 91 which mr knowlton himself said was one of the two most heavily traveled ar teries between the mississippi and the pacific coast it is on such highways that the motorists biggest dividends in trav el satisfaction economy and high way safety lets let s concentrate tor for a year or two on highways people live an and d leave the at peace in their solitude |
