Show MILFORD EDITOR ES 0 OIN IT TROAD T ROAD MATTER THE MILFORD NEWS NEWIS milford utah oct 31 1938 dr M E bird delta utah dear dea doctor tender uder date of october 9 1 I wrote 1 N personal bonal letter to frank beckwith Beckwi bh editor ot of the delta chronicle retter acing my opinion ot of the importance above all others of a north south highway connecting milford and delta and paralleling the union pacific tracks trucks adding the further personal opinion that the proposal of a road toward nevada T ing oft off from the milford delta road might be the means ot of bringing the latter road into existence much sooner than might otherwise be the case also I 1 stated that the milford lions club was on record with the state road commission asking an early and complete investigation ot of the T road proposition this letter was written as an editor to editor corn com muni cation and I 1 sent a copy to you as one of the prominent road boost era ot of millard county so that you might know what I 1 was doing in reply you wrote me a very tine fine let ter taking issue with my ideas as to the T road proposal which you most certainly had a perfect right to do my letter to mr was not intended lor for publication but merely to learn his reaction person ally and thinking be he might have a pretty good idea of the feelings of his community which he would be able to communicate to me la in an awer to my letter but he chose to publish the letter and thereby pre a hot controversy which has been utilized extensively and end quite unfairly in a political way that letter was written on my own initiative and without the suggest ion ton or even the knowledge of any one else and I 1 undertook to voice the opinions ot of no one but myself from the time I 1 first came to mil ford five and a halt years ago I 1 have shave seen a standard road con injecting milford and delta as the biggest thing that could come to these towns and to western beaver and millard counties Count lea in general constituting as it would the most important link in ift a 91 west loop road that would serve heavy inter state traffic safely and speedily as well as being a social and economic advantage to our own people par alleging all eling transcontinental rail and air lines it will be a natural for or nation al recognition Is soon as we can get I 1 traveled knowing well how hard pressed the state road commission Is lor tor funds with which to standard ize new roads in outlying sections of the state I 1 thought I 1 saw in the T road a solution of the problem that would give western utah two high type road simultaneously had mr beckwith resorted to his typewriter instead of to his linotype machine and written me something along the lines of your letter this liot furore would not have been brought about perhaps at a time when many people let politics blind them to other issues and vice versa now something in response to the abree letters written by milford par ties and appearing ini in the chronicle of october 27 As I 1 have already stated the milford lions club went on record asking tor for an early and complete investigation ot of a T troad road routing west from the milford delta road this action was taken at the june 8 meeting of the club which meeting was attended by 17 mem bers all business and men of milford an exceptionally good attendance tor for a summer meet ing of the club and the action taken was the feature article of the june 9 issue of the milfrod news neither mr georee george jefferson nor mr har old cline was present at that meet ing mr L A was pros pres ent and took a prominent part in the discussion detailing the earlier bis his tory of the T road idea leading up to itsu its discussion at the delta meet ing or of the associated civic clubs of south jim utah and expressing the belief bellel that broad minded men of western millard county would tall fall in line with the idea and help put it across in conclusion I 1 should like to state that though I 1 still believe my sug bug of the T road bias has merit I 1 am not disposed to stand against a ma bority of oe the people ot of any comman ity feeling as I 1 do that it will be only thru united and broad minded action that we shall be able to get a loop road a reality tor for that la Is one road you will find me working for until we get it in fairness to me I 1 think this letter should be publish ed in the chronicle yours alnee sincerely rely david S williams the chronicle repeats its stand we favor a north south road delta to milford we will work with any group so minded in that we will work with mr williams wholeheartedly and do so cheerfully we will blo also at all urns times state to our read road or r what wa W tool in a T amt W wa in vitt lakott tor for and against FB |
