Show BUGS vs CROPS B C H wilkinson of peppard seed coinman Co inpan just about all the injurious bugs and insects that work on millard county farm crops are coming forth in great numbers now they had plenty of shelter in the weed patch es during the past winter and the heavy snow covering throughout the cold weather gave them excellent protection GREEN STINK BUGS or chinch bugs are being found and reported from several localities we gather ed specimens of some other bugs which farmers took to be chinch bugs and sent them to professor sorensen at the agricultural college this morning thursday may 27 we tel him about them he says that the gray bugs we sent most of them about a quarter of an inch a cross the back with a sure enough stink when mashed are not the green bug but a smaller bug which is related to the green chinch bug he says he has not known of these smaller bugs being numerous enough to cause damage but when they are as thick as we have seen them they may be injurious he la Is sending us more information by letter we found these gra grab stink bugs in patches of old russia thistle when disturbed they drop off and crawl into cracks in the ground we found that with some wind a tire fire would sweep through the old thistles and burn most of the bugs before they dropped oft off we found also that these bugs did not like to travel on foot over wet ground just tor for safe ty sake farmers will do well to burn all weeds and rubbish they can and irrigate where the bugs are tak ing shelter in the cracks they do not seem to be able to fly more than a few feet at a time very likely they can be driven into trenches and burled buried keevil are numerous Nunie Nume ious tous are more numerous than they have been in many years al ready they are holding some alfalfa fields at a standstill several farm ers are getting their spray machin es ready to run A few have started spraying with the widespread in fe test atlon station of weevil every spray ma chine Is likely to have plenty of land to cover farmers will do well tc to make their plans and arrangements early in order to get their weevil taken care of 0 in good time tarnish plant bugs in plenty tarnish plant bugs are plenty nu cerous too weevil spray is not likely to kill many of them chanc es are that they will not be numer oua ous enough to injure the earliest al talta falfa seed very much but they are likely to multiply so that they will be a menace to later crops unless steps are taken to control them we have found that they do not live very long on bare ground where the sun shines directly on them it fields are cut fresh and then dragged to a dust mulch so that the ground is bare for several days before the new growth starts practically all of these bugs either leave or die they thrive best in heavy rank growth it if the new growth comes on slowly they are not so likely to injure it fields that were pastured clean up to about this time last season had very few of these bugs chalets rl 4 chalets 4 practically always has to multiply a time or so from the flies that live over winter before there are enough of them to a seed crop clean cutting and clean cultivation will go a long way tow ard protecting the seed crop from them although there are occasions when they move in from surround ing fields in most cases it is the chalets flies that winter and multi ply right on the premises that take the crop old cummy piles harbor millions of them farmers should get rid of the old chaff piles before alfalfa starts to blossom some authorities firmly believe that insects are the greatest menace to mankind because they are so nu berous and multiply so fast they certainly appear to be the greatest menace to our crops this season with ith plenty of water and reasonably favorable weather up to now crops look mighty good but the bugs are after them it is a matter of corn com interest to get the bugs kill ed oft off as fast as possible and mature the splendid crops that are coming on |
