Show THE HEAD GROUP of neah VERN NIP L glyphs tell a graphic ator of a head Jl hunters baid raid warrior un lors S hold gruesome trophy beti between icen them capune momen omen led by arms child taken glyphs in dry fork canyon near vernal momen tastefully attired R L 0 21 0 in dry fork canyon about eight miles from vernal utah the cliff are profusely covered with ancient indian the subjects cov er a wide range from the usual and ordinary glyphs of deer primitive medicine men creatures up through the gamut of belter better and better draftsmanship until forma forms of men and women are seen highly embellished with superior necklaces headdresses eyes nose and mouth drawn cord skirts placed on the women neatly done ear pendants on the men hopi hair whorls on the women medicine men of ornate decorations round bodied people glyphs of turkey bear paws human footprints the humpback ed flute player and mazes or lab of extreme intricacy but among all that wealth of form two groups stand out of such marked in terest as to achieve distinction these two groups are the head hunters shown in the first reproduction and the group of the great warrior with shield to follow the head hunter group the group shown above depicts a return of warriors from i i successful raid the husband was slain and his decapitated head Is born as a grue some trophy of the tight fight between the two men at the right note that this head has slanting lines running from the eyes downward and out ward to the edges of the face this Is not in my opinion slant eyes tor for they would slant at the opposite angle but rather are the downward and outward paint lines of common use among many tribes us bally yellow or red the dominating man figure of the group Is the man with the rod of small circles in his hand to the right his headdress consists of two upward lifting castellated effects of which each Is decorated with rows of dota dots he has eyes mouth and what Is rare a nose depleted he wears ear pendants or bobs from bis his side hair across his chest Is a massive neck lace drawn in solidly between that and his waistband his body Is dec orated with a profusion of dots two feet are shown but in an im possible sible attitude toes in flat per spec tive the next man to the left helps to hold the decapitated head his own headdress is dissimilar to the other man one bob hangs from his headdress higher up than an ear pendant his cheat chest lacks a neck lace a line runs down from each shoulder to his waistband which Is two light bands not a solid bar as in the other figure he holds a woman captive hia his right arm lost behind her shoulder the first women ie Is of smallish stature as compared to the woman next to the left band hand figure wears a hop hopi hair whorl and below her chin wears a solid decoration continued down her front into an artful tab embroidery or frontal dress ornament her shoulders and arms are drawn in solidly 1 she wears a cord skirt f signifying the woman form plainly dit ferenti abed from the men possibly a cord Is Is about her left wrist but that Is conjectural the man next to her Is a square headed person paint slants blants daubed over his cheeks from the eyes and wears an ear pendant or side hair bob on each side he is quite plain wears no necklace or body decor allons and one foot Is shown the woman to the left shows a row of dots tor for the crown of her head and a heavy daub of paint ov oy er her nose this raises the In interest ing query in conjecture was her hair cropped and her face painted with black to mark her sorrow for her slain husband it Is a ure which we can only guess at she wears a plainer but longer frontal body ta tah with heavy marks joining it to her sides the sides and arms of her figure are drawn in solidly the man to the extreme left wears a he adress so much like an ed crown as to make it distinctive ear tabs or side bob pendants on each side he wears a nee necklace klace of tour four row rowa of circles no other body decoration and two light lines indicate a waist band As to the size of the figures vie largest man he to the right with a cane of circles is almost life size A smaller figure possibly that of a young girl Is at the lower extreme right around her head she wear the simple of childhood as the too young tor for distinction A bodice or sack like dress Is her only upper body covering and yet her sex denoted by the cord skirt there are other head hunter scenes in this small area but this one is the outstanding group of the series |
