Show im BOI A BIG SUM aa i I 1 the deseret district pioneers beld field in scout camping being the first district in the state of to attempt the responsibility ot of illing and conducting its own sum mer camp this camp was under taken as an experiment by invitation 0 of the Timpa council to deter mine the feasibility of the various districts conducting their own camps with the Timpa gos council assisting in an advisory capacity the assistance of executive an derson and ana dr L D croutz was ot of great value by way of suggie stion and checking because of their long and varied experience aa as campers one hundred twenty five scouts and shouters stood at salute as the flag was raised for the official op ening of the camp wednesday may clarence bliss was in charge of colors and camp discipline and junior walker was official camp bu gler most of the first day was spent in ili I 1 getting setting up the many camp and in cleaning away dead timbers at 3 p m the entire camp joined in ili an ob and discipline hike led by the gobi city scoutmaster to a near by leak i eak after colors the boys all turned out and brought in ili i a young mountain of wood which was put against a giant dead quaking aspen tree in the center of the parade grounds logs that required aa as many as thirty boys to carry were brought in and stood up against thel pig ig tree at the beginning of the ev ening program dr pfoutz officially dedicated the camp by shooting an arrow into the hills telling the boys finders keepers and started the first big camp fire with flint and steel As the tire fire gained the crowd was forced back and giant tongues of flame leaped high unto the air battling bathing the surrounding hills and cliffs in a flood of light after the tire fire died down somewhat mr frank beckwith gave a very in te resting talk on the stars and their relationship to each other thelan terest of the group was held by the very tine fine story in which mr beckwith covered his subject he ell maced the evening with the ute in dian than myth how fire was brought to man thursday morning at 5 clock junior walker tho only half awake himself was out blowing the cob webs out of bis his bugle and blasting out that old familiar call that man and boy alike bs h e so much to hear we had a real hike that day which was ws full of varied and interesting things in the course of the day we jumped up twenty two head of deer which furnished a beautiful scene never to be forgotten by the b boys oy s tor for many of them had never seen a deer in ili the wild before to be continued next week contributed |
