lake city october 1 to 8 it is at the state fair that those who have dream ed of being pronounced champion 1 demonstrator demon sho knan mirrian herdsman I 1 dress maker or fruit server aleain whether or not their dreams will materialize it is at the state fair that two boya boys and two g ris will be chosen to rep resent utah at the jacif c internal lional livestock show at portland later in the tall fall one girl is selected to receive a valuable prize tor for her outstanding work in canning and a girl is chosen to represent utah at the national club congress in chi cago by virtue ot of her excellency in dress making no wonder of utah s younger set are enthusiastic over winning their way to the fair by displacing super lor for animals showing their abil ty to demonstrate demo strate can or cool after D P murray state club lead er returned from visiting many of the clubs of the state he predicted that the 4 H club section at the 1932 state fair would far excell any previous section both from the standpoint of and quality all over the state I 1 find boya grooming an pals girls sewing can ling or studying health charts in preparation for the state contests mr murray reported the 4 H club activities at the 1932 state fair will be concluded with a luncheon which will mill be held in the dining room of the oc qc 1 friday october 7 A special feature of this luncheon will be the the delta district with the idea of learning the practices which the farmers of the delta district were adopting and to determine whether or not the e tices cices might be improved 0 a that more average farms where con eldered in this survey and after a careful analysis of the data obtain pd d a conference was called of all those interested in we this proposition and recommendations were werd made tor for future agricultural bract ies economic conditions have changed since mince that time but in checking over these recommendations we feel that they still hold good and it if followed out carefully care tuly on each farm a better rounded out agriculture will result with an increased and a great deal more satisfaction the specific recommendations of the committee on farm organization as adopted by the economic confer once ence were first that the gross re turns from the farms should be ap proximately 3 and that the ex benses should not exceed 1600 second that the ideal unit in the del that on this 80 acie farm 60 acres should be the maximum planted to alfalfa and of this amount only a certain pertain portion should be set asade each year for seed the idea being barlly to rase hay to feed livestock with a minimum gamble on the side tor for seed 15 acres should be devoted to growling growing feed for livestock ek 2 acres td to mangles or sugar beets and 3 ac res to the yards anid gardens four that the following should be consid ered minimum profitable yields per acre 6 5 bu alfalfa seed 3 tons alfalfa hay where hay alone Is grown 20 bu of wheat and 50 bu of barley five that the family should secure a large portion of the family living from the farm the dairy committee recommended one that on the average 12 cows should be maintained two that low producers less than ibs lbs of butterfat old cows and cows fall fail ing and non breeders should be cull led ed out very closely three that feed requirements per cow per annum should be 6 tons of hay when hay is fed alone 5 tons of hay and 34 tons of grain or 3 tons of hay and 3 tons of corn silage the committee on crops other than alfalfa recommended dd eld one that 20 acres be devoted to crops other than alfalfa to provide home grown grains and feeds ne necessary cesary for livestock two that on the lighter types of soll irish cobbler and bliss triumph potatoes be planted as a cash crop three that early yellow dent and white flint corn be planted to till fill the trench silos four that all farm manure maur be conserved and applied to farm crops regularly five that home vegetables and small fruit gar deas dens should provide the es vegetables and fruits for the family heeds the sheep and beef cattle corn com cittee recommended one that where practicable head of breed ing ewes be ept on the farm two that the best mutton rams be used in these flocks three that beet beef cattle and lambs be fed tor for market purposes the above is a mere synopsis of the survey they made but the rec commendations are sound and should be put in practice on every farm on the west side it is true that our water ter has not been sufficient in the past year or two to practice crop ro tation but that
