Show A G EPISODE ON f aile COLORADO RIVER britten by ruby rubt gurnei daughter dau ahter of mi it ind mis alis it R L turner of the coith th tract in Feb february 1906 a man by the name of bill law and his partner attempted to go down the colorado river they outfitted themselves with a boat and provisions at green river utah and launched upon the river they went safely past where the grand and the green come er passing the points of danged but when they reached the cataract rapids their boat capsized and flung both men into the whirling seething foaming waters of the rai rl er bill law could swim and by a effort managed to get to the shore barely saving his life but his partner was immediately drowned for eleven days law tried fo 0 find a way out but there were ledges from fifteen hundred to two thousand feet high confronting him during this time he lived on what squash he could find the seeds of which had drifted down and been carr ed by the current to the sand bars and there found lod gement and grew out of the provisions a sack of flour was inas washed ashore which he eagerly got all the rest of his provisions and the means to cook with were lost in the waters law finally climbed a tree and by swaying it back and forth at last swung himself close enough to jump from the tree onto a ledge just above him he then torkeld his way about half way up this ledge by putting his hands and feet in tiny niches in the locks and the better to feel his way with his toes took off his shoes about halt half way to the top the cliffs seemed to baffle him as presenting no way of getting on farther he walked back and forth on this ledge tor for a long time trying to study a way out until finally he saw a very email small hole in the rocks above him which might lead beyond and out it if he could crawl through it by great effort he managed to iwo L up the dangerous rock to the hole but when he attempted to go through it he had to back out because it was too small perched there like an eagle many hundred feet up he took oft off his clothes wh ph ich he pushed thru the hole ahead of him and then wormed bis iia way through came out on top put on his clothes and went to a sheep camp which he found he came out on the cataract maze seventy five miles east and a little south of all the strain and worry he was under unbalanced him mentally so that the sheep herder ad had to take care of him nurse him back to health and as soon as he could took him to lorenzo turner s place in hanksville Hanks ville law lived with the turners for about six months and then being over his fright and hav ing recovered he went back to his home in iowa we thank miss turner very kind ly it will revive old memories to recall that miss turners aunt then miss slyvia turner worked on this paper before the present manage ment bought it the lorenzo tur her mentioned here was miss ruby s grandfather rand father |
