Show aase M TO r LOLA IN THE LAKE IT T WAS not terribly cold in the winter time where lola lived bill still it was cold they did not have the severe winter storms nor the heavy snowballs snowfalls snow falls not cor the ice fee but it was sharp cold weather just the same the wind blew hard at tilla time of the year harder and colder than tit nl other times just to show that it wa vins winter time here too lola had bad gone canoeing it was a cold raw day but she loved to go 90 on the lake tit at all times limes A wind was blowing hard it maile made the lake full of little squalls it was liard hard to manage a boat when the lake was like that but lola was used to the lake and its winds now and again one got the better of her but not often she was very her arms began to ache strong and she was a very good swim mer too it had bad looked today a little as though it might rain for that roa rea son lola had worn her raincoat 1 I might as well be prepared she had said wisely enough now lola did enjoy the rough wa va ter and the wind and the wild 1 look of the jay day only it became harder to paddle the canoe than she had ever known it to be and she had gone much further up the lake than she had in tended it had bad been so easy going up the lake the wind ind had been with her and she lind had gone further than llian she lind imd intended before slie she realized it it as coining back that hint was tio hard her arrus arms begun began to ache ah she e felt she just keep on pad dlin ond yet she was so strong nut but tills this time tile the wind was retting getting lie he better belter of her if f only silo could stop and rest for just ono one second but silo she hail to vatch out for tile the squalls coming in all directions ti making laking it so hard to manage as well as to work so liard hard then came two breezes froni from appo site directions and the hie wind began to blow harder than ever how tier her arms ached just for a seconds festl oh just for a seconds rest silo she kept thinking over find and over again she missed one stroke with tier her pad die she help IL it and a hurry flurry of wind toppled the canoe right over lola was in tile the lake she was quite a ilog distance from shore shoie and the water was very cold with little cold streams from the surrounding hills making it very very cold to in some parts but lola iola was a good swimmer and she was not afraid she almost liked tile the rest from paddling too of course she kept the canoe with tier lier she have gone off sw im ming without that tor for she knew that would be dangerous and site she take foolish chances she swam and she swam and she swam one arm over the canoe the other using the side stroke she swam with all her clothes on and the raincoat as aa well she readied reached home safely oh how relieved her family were when they knew she was safe tor for they had wor ried about her on the lake in such a storm they hati not known until afterward after warl that she had been in the lake but the raincoat shrunk it was too small now for her in the sleeves it looked quite absurd it was too short for her and it was too tight across the shoulders and did not fit at all but she had to wear it now badly she did feel about it if only she had taken it off and let it go in the lake no one would have minded so long as site she was safe and they would have realized how hard it would have been to swim with it on but she had kept it on and it had shrunk and slie she was safe anyway she still tin had to wear the raincoat what a great great pity it did seem copyright |
