Show COUNTY DIRECT LETTER TO COUNTY JUSTICES COUNTY OF MILLARD MILI yARD office ot of bleik utah march esth 1929 dear sir in checking reports filed by the precinct justices of 0 the peace it apa appears to us that a number ot of ih ahe justices are very lenient with offenders who come before cheik courts especially so in the amount oe ot tines fines imposed and then the of either all or a part ot of the tine fine we desrie to call your attention jo to the expense the county is put to in all such cases nearly always there I 1 is an expense necessarily lly I 1 incurred li by the sheriff and county attorney attorn gurred Y which consists ot of mil mileage gage meals telephones cil liones and telegrams etc as we 11 ll as your own tees fees then in many cases there are jury a and nd witness tees fees to be paid so that in all there Is considerable expense to meet the record discloses the tact fact that very often after the county has been been put to this expense that a tine fine is imposed which falls short of paying ther the actual expense and then in addition it appears to have become a practice to suspend either all or a part of the tine fine then again we find cases where tines fines have been imposed and a small amount paid and the offender seems to have gone any effort being made to collect the remainder of the fine it is our opinion that it if a case is such as to justify a tine flue that it should be collected in full or a com mitt ment issued remanding tile the offender to tile the custody of the sheriff to be placed in the county jail we think if most offenders are co confronted with a jail sentence that they will not lot be long in paying their tines fines our desire is to cooperate with you fully in these matters but we feel that it Is our duty to call these conditions to your and ask that you give the same your most careful consideration sincerely trusting that these conditions will be remedied and assuring you of our best support we are very truly yours board of county commissioners by W D melville clerk atty and mrs willard hanson drove down front roni salt lake sunday their son cill bill who accompanied them remained to spend hi sEaster vacation with mr air anti and mrs prank frank I 1 13 hanson |
