continuous balloting in convention assembled loroy leroy 11 II cox of 0 st george and A L larsen ot of delta ware were chosen nominees at the republican fifth judicial district convention ven tion tor for district judge and district attorney respectively both men were elected to their positions on the ticket by a majority of 45 votes with only 38 required to place them in nomination and both were upon motion carried made the unanimous choice of the convention the convention was called to order at 2 p m at mildord Mil tord utah by district chairman dennis woods with secretary E S tatter sall ball in attendance the usual committee work was delegated and while it was being taken care ot of on oil motion of 0 senator herschl of 0 washington county mr air E W kelly ot of salt lake city candidate tor for the nomination of governor on the republican ticket was extended the privilege ot of addressing the house the committee on oil credentials returned a favorable report on oil the credentials denti als of all delegations and reported that the five counties were allotted votes in the following amounts juab 15 millard 21 beaver 9 iron 14 and washington 16 15 making in all a total of 74 votes the first slight controversy arose upon the report of the committee on order of business one provision of which was waa that the counties should vote in the following order juab lion bever washington and millard milla atilla a rd which had been arrived at by c casting asting lots instead of the usual method of voting according to alphabetical order washington county made some objection to accepting this new arrangement but was out voted and the report was accepted this placed millard county with her 21 votes in a vantage position and would have given her to a very large extent the balance of power had bad tho county been able to get together as a unit the real contest began with the naming ot of candidates for the nomination of district judge five bams were placed before the convention each being unqualifiedly and ably presented as the choice of the particular section from which lie he came every county except iron had a candidate d and millard was in the weakened position of having two candidates the candidates in ili the order named were abos 11 II burton wm win B higgins leroy 11 cox 0 A murdock and A L larsen the first ballot resulted in the following vote by counties juab 15 tor for burton iron 1 tor for murdock 9 for cox and 4 for larsen deaver beaver 5 tor for burton and 4 tor for murdock millard 10 tor for higgins Illg gins and 11 tor for larsen washington 15 tor for cox then followed fifteen more ballots between each ot of which was a recess of from 6 to 20 minutes during which the fastest ot of high pressure lobbying was in perfect order throughout all sixteen ballots juab county voted a straight fifteen votes voles for or burton and washington counted voted its fifteen votes tor for cox millard county was about evenly split lor for her two candidates first voting a small majority tor for one and then the other until the thirteenth ballot when she began to weaken tor for cox five of heavers beavers votes stayed with burton throughout the entire convention and four our were tor for murdock docic until the fifteenth ballot when they switched for or cox after the first ballot iron county divided its 1 votes between larsen and cox div ing larsen the majority of its votes and at time making him high man until the fourteenth ballot when it went fourteen straight tor for cox the fifteenth ballot showed cox well in ill the lead with 34 votes murdock being out of the race the next ballot higgins withdrew and twelve of billiards votes wont went for cox resulting in his victory the next order of 0 busi business nesa was the naming of candidates tor for the nomination of district attorney three names were hastily placed before the convention two of them again being from mellard county those named were wm B 13 A L larsen larsan and geo 11 II lunt mr air lunt the present incumbent of the office and ot of whom some mention had been made as a candidate f tor or judge had apparently decided t to 0 stay out of the first race and bo be co content n with entering the second As a result washington county to whom lie he would have been the chief competition had lie ho entered tile the former race repaid him by casting a solid vote tor for him tor for tills latter position i mr air lunt also had his own coun county ty solidly mr air higgins still retained the millard county support that lie ho had had in the former contest and also apparently was given the denver beaver votes that had gone tor for murdock murdoch tor for judge tie the other halt of mill ards support was with mr air larsen and lie he also had all of the delegates from juab and deaver beaver counties that had formerly voted tor for burton tor for judge the first ballot thus showed mr air larsen in the lead with 31 votes and mr lunt but 2 votes behind the next ballot heaver deaver went solid tor for larsen placing him four more votes in load lead but still wili tout majority the third ballot however higgins withdrew alt altogether ogeth in favor 0 of larsen and lie he received a majority ot of 45 votes the convention although very long drawn due to the number ot of candidates in ili the field at no time became bitter and ended with the best of fe tec gling egling the two men nominated were from the first outstanding in popularity and although tile the different localities seemed loath to desert native sons while they still had a chance yet the convention was unanimously delighted with wit h the out come the republicans of the district feel that they have nominated a very strong ticket mr cox is a graduate ot of the brigham young university has taken a year post poet graduate work at the U 0 f U and received ills his degree ot of doctor of jurisprudence from the university of chicago law school since his graduation lie he has practiced law in washington county and Is the present county attorney of that coull county ty mr air cox is an all ex soldier and served eighteen months in franco france during the world war five months ot of which was at the front ile iio Is also a member of the american legion mr air larsen Is a very well known and highly esteemed practitioner ot of this county A native of sanpete county he moved to this county shortly after being admitted to the bar in ili 1919 and has practiced here tile the greater part 0 of the time ever since lie he has twice acted as county ati attorney orney ot of this county and his popularity insures him good support at the he polls from this part of 0 the district als |
