Show WINNERS OF PRIZE LETTER CONTEST ANNOUNCED tile the progress offered three prizes to the grade school pupils submitting the best letters regarding their plans for the summer A number of 0 the best letters have appeared in print luring during the past two months the editor submitted the question 0 of f d determining e t eri n ini ii g the w winners i n n e r s ot 0 the c contest 0 nt e s t t to 0 S bupt supt u pt fa farnsworth r n s w 0 r th who suggested that the teachers of the fillmore junior high school act as judges accordingly we submitted more than a dozen of 0 the letters that were unquestionably the best received after carefully reading these letters and first selecting the six best the judges awarded the prizes as follows first place norma hansen to receive in merchandise obtainable at any store in fillmore second place claudia melville in merchandise obtainable at any store in fillmore llnore Pi third place genevieve Genev leve higgins in movie tickets to the avalon letters receiving honorable mention as being very good but having some mistakes or having tailed failed to comply with the rules were those written by remola relly kelly helen mcbride and naomi paxton the editor wishes to thank all the pupils who contributed letters it was a pleasure to read them and hear that the students really had such interesting plans for or the summer and that they were able to write such good letters those who won prizes are to be especially complimented as their letters were indeed exceptionally good your checks for your prizes will be at the progress office just call and get them following are the first and second prize letters fillmore utah march 9 1927 progress fillmore utah I 1 am thirteen years old and am an eighth grade student of the junior high school ot of fillmore although I 1 am working very hard in school this year I 1 have decided to spend my summer vacation in work as well as pleasure I 1 have been taking music lessons on the piano and fully intend to stay with them during the summer and try to accomplish com something along this line about the time school closes in the spring we must get our gardens planted so before I 1 go on any oa outings I 1 must help with this work while I 1 am planting a garden I 1 am also going coln g to plant flowers to help to beautify our home and the surroundings roun dings about it when I 1 get this work finished I 1 will be ready for my outing trip to the slant temple with the seagull girls of the primary we expect to go in the morning and return at night after this is 19 over I 1 will wall be contented to rest a few days at home to help with the house work and make plans for an outing to the sand hills south of town a crowd at 0 us girls plan on this trip every year we take our lunch and spend the day out there the last two years we have been fortunate enough to see a herd herd of leer deer roaming over the hills among the cedars and do hope wo we can have tile the same experience this year for it sure gives us a thrill to see the deer bounding along while I 1 enjoy my outings very much I 1 neglect reading the newspapers some of the best magazines and several good books by standard authors I 1 want to spend a few days on the farm visiting my cousin there are so many interesting things to do that we are kept busy every minute we will sleep outs outside ide where we can watch tile the beautiful moon and stars in the heavens at the first peep of 0 day we hear the turkeys flying off their roosts boosts so we must be moving also to follow them up in the field to keep the coyotes from making a raid on oil them we keep heep on watch for several hours and then return to the house with a good appetite for break fast the rest of at the day we will help with the housework take a boat ride and swim at the pond and play touch and bide slid and seek around the haystacks liay stacks we will also read and make candy after a few days ot of this I 1 think I 1 will be quite tired of farm cam life and will bo be ready to come back to town where there are plenty ot of trees and shade by this time the berries will be ready to pick so while I 1 am taking a rest from farm life I 1 can help pick them and get them bottled when this work Is dane there wont be any more particular work to do tor for a while so father and mother can continued on page eight PRIZE continued from page ono one take us children tor for a weeks trip to the mountains we will take plenty of 0 nice things to cat and some good books to read while we are there we will live a real outdoor life and enjoy tho the work of 0 mother nature we will go on exploring trips and also look for pine dine gum in tills this way 1 I think we will spend a very pleasant week when I 1 return it will not be but a short time before school starts so I 1 must help mother get the fruit bottled the pickles made and other necessary fall all work done so that when schol opens I 1 will be ready to I 1 thought they be of 0 interest to the readers of the progress this Is what I 1 would like to do after school Is out I 1 will rest for about two weeks then I 1 will go to milford and spend a short time with my cousin who lives there about the first of june our sea gull class in primary r mary are going to mantl to work in the temple which will bo be a real treat to me in july my uncle and aunt ot of too ele aro coming here to visit us ug when they go back I 1 will go with them and see the place where we lived several years ago I 1 will also visit the smelter which Is located there will all go to salt lake city I 1 have alter after staying slaying there a while we a very dear friend who lives there and we will go everywhere we will go out to saltair and enjoy a plunge in great salt lake I 1 want to go to liberty park visit the state capitol and have a trip through the different canyons ifould go to picture shows every day and go to all the big stores and buy every thing I 1 wanted I 1 want to be still a minute after my return home I 1 would rest a few days and then start packing tor for my trip tr p south I 1 will visit brydes canyon cedar breaks zions canyon kaibab forest grand canyon and other places of interest in that tha part pact of 0 our country on my return trip I 1 would stop at fish lake and enjoy the fishing boat riding and other sports there in between times I 1 want to have several trips to winoka hot springs also up our own canyon east of town to fish then I 1 would start to get ready tor for school this Is what I 1 likely will do after school Is out I 1 will sleep as late as I 1 want to every day our crowd of girls will have several hikes in the hills hilla and our seagull sea gull class will go to mantl I 1 am quite sure I 1 will go to winoka a few times and I 1 will have one good trip out of town somewhere the rest of the amie will be spent doing just what most of us do building air castles and having most of them tall fall down but even that
