Show origin of dry farming in millard county about fifteen years ago some pL philles pir iLles Lies in fillmore abt obtained dined a few bushels of red ceaf dry land land wheat from 0 II 11 mcbride of thoele booe le but they all irei irrigated gated what they planted excepting mr N J beauregard rd who planted some in what is called the old field about abou t th three ree m miles iles w westerly este aly f om fillmore lie he ii irrigated 0 ed part of it but left about an acre and a half without any irrigation 0 at threshing time tit ne the 0 wheat tua turn rn out over 30 bushels to the acre this ws was a favor able year but it set some of us chinkin thinking and a few years later mr J D and christian un derson took up a quarter section each about three and a half miles south of fillmore cleared oft off the sa sages saes es brush n I 1 plowed 1 aad planted eai each h a patch the same year mr planted a bushel of bluestem wheat to the acre ie re it was too thle thick c and had small heads but af after ter the rabbits had taken a good sharr it over eleven bushels to the acre mr anderson plant rd cd about 4 45 bushels of lied ceaf wheat to the acre with a press daiil d I 1 ill but neglected to cure it for and the rabbits wre were very numerous that year took about one third of the 30 acre patch and moro more than half of the other was smut and it was an unusual dry year but we thrashed bushels of what was left of the 30 80 acres it had large lare lar e heads well tilled other purties parties took up lund north east and south of fillmore and have varied success but at no fio time had dry farming been tested here on strictly methods iut but many have be come convinced from what ex piri ments have been made th ti t dry farman farming on s prin cip cipols can be mude a financial sul su cess tee average precipitation in and near fillmore fora for a number of years has been abelt ab ut 14 inches but has been much moi more e the last three years one year a fraction over lover 2 21 inches christian anderson subscribed abed and sworn to before me this da day y of july 1909 my commission expires june 1913 J S giles notary public |
