Show V. of IT. NEWS BUREAU The story of the economic and social so-cial development of Utah in early days is told in a one-volume history entitled. "The Founding of Utah." written by Prof. Levi Edgar Young of the department of Western History His-tory at the University of Utah. The work of Professor Young has been accepted by the Charles Scribner's j Sons company, andi is now being published pub-lished in New York City. The book tells also of the early day 'explorations and development of the J state, including stories of Escalante, j Jedediah Smith, Enos Leonard, Et- ienne Provost and John C. Freemont. jit deals with the struggles of the pioneers in redeeming the soil, their conflict with the Indians, an their hard work in establishing homes. The book tells also of the early ady schools and the founding of the University Uni-versity in the wilderness. Prof. Young has made careful ; study of the original journals and memoirs of the pioneers and has had access to over 400 stories of the j pioneers who came to Utah and the Great basin before the advent of the railroad. Cyrus Dallin andi Mahonrl Young, two Utah artists! are doing the illustrating for Prof. Young's book. Some of the most noted of Ameri-j Ameri-j can scholars have read the manu- script and have pronounced It dls-j dls-j tinct contribution to Western hlstor-i hlstor-i ical writing. |
