Show ONE LAWYER'S WORK Good lawyers are such accurate-minded accurate-minded folk that I shall feel safer if I share Florence Monahan's letter with you word for word. Otherwise some phrase would be sure to get to a wrong-twisted meaning. I know. STATE REFORMATORY FOR WOMEN Florence Monahan, Superintendent. Shakopee, Minn. Dear Mrs. Miller: Born In Chicago, I have always lived in a city until I took charge of this Institution In-stitution four years ago. However, may say that I like living In the small town very much better than In the city. I began my work as a schoolteacher, as so many women do. While teaching teach-ing school I studied law and, after receiving re-ceiving -my degree, I went Into the Minnesota children's bureau to handle Illegitimacy cuses. This bureau carries car-ries out the model children's laws of Minnesota. The bureau Is under ouf state board of control, and when the reformatory for women was opened the board of control thought that, through my experience with all sorts of girls, I could manage this institution. We have an average population of about sixty women, all over eighteen years of age. Our average age Is about thirty years. Women are sentenced here for felonies and gross misdemeanors. misdemean-ors. We have all the women convicted convict-ed of any crime which carries with It a sentence of more than a year. Including In-cluding life prisoners. I have eight women on my staff and five men. You will see that It Is rather dim-cult dim-cult for me to answer your questions In regard to the average girl starting In to work. It seems to me that whether she starts In a big city or a small town docs not matter ho much as lier own ability In whatever work iihe tries to do. I am intensely Interested In the League of Women Voters and have been on the state board since It was organized, and previous to that time I was on the state board of the old u ff rage organization. Very truly yours, FLORENCE MONAHAN, Superintendent |
