Show MORE AND BETTER SEED PER ACRE INCREASES POTATO YIELD " Last fall a firm of California's potato po-tato growers harvested an average of 1,000 bushels of potatoes per acre : from 9 acres. The rest of the country, : if previous records are a re-, re-, liable index, harvested approximately 113 bushels to the acre. Farmers in Great Britain have been producing an average of 200 bushels per acre 1 for a number of years. It is evident, says, William Stuart, potato specialist special-ist of the United States Department : of Agriculture, that the general run of farmers who grow poatoes in the United States do not make efficient use of the available knowledge on in-, . creasing acre production. j Of the many factors causing a low j average potato yield In this country,' poor seed is one of the most import- I ant, says Mr. Sutart. The American j potato grower, generally speaking,1 pays too little attention to the quality 1 ! and quantity of the seed used. The j California record was due in part to j I the use of 40 bushels of seed per j acre, almost twice the quantity gen-j gen-j ("ally used even by the most progres-! progres-! ive growers. Perhaps the best way for the average aver-age grower to be assured of good seed i- tn purchase "certified seed." Certi-f:ed Certi-f:ed seed is being produced by groups c.' growers in 20 or more states, who 1 y ive siiecial attention to the produc-' produc-' lion of seed that will pass State infraction in-fraction as to yielding ability, uniformity, uni-formity, trueness to name, and freedom free-dom from disease. There is abundant evidence that certified seed is improved improv-ed :eed. and that it will yield much more than cor.nion or "r rocery store" seed. For instance, the average yield in Michigan last year was 122 bushels per acre, while the average produc-, produc-, tion from certified seed was 256 bushels per acre. This represents a j gain of 134 bushels on each acre j planted with certified seed. In com- parative tests made last year by the Tennessee State experiment station certified seed produced an average of 183 bushels to the acre, while the yield from uncertified seed was but 102 bushels per acre, |
