Show CHILE IS VISITED EARTHQUAKE CHILEAN REGIONS DEVASTATED BY UPHEAVALS OF NATURE; LARGE PROPERTY LOSS Coquimbo, Copiapo and Other Communities Com-munities Visited by Disaster; Telegraph Communication Has Ceascy Antofagasta, Chile. Upwards of 100 persons were killed and many scrious-I scrious-I ly wounded by the eathquake which overturned many buildings early Saturday Sat-urday at Copiapo, capital of the province prov-ince of Atacama. All telegraphic communication with points north of La Serena, in the province of Coquimbo has ceased. Advices Ad-vices telling of the disaster at Copiapo were received here by way of Bolivia and Buenos Aires. The tidal wave at Chanaral destroyed des-troyed the greater part of the town. The inhabitants are without food. Repors from Concepcion and Talnca-huano, Talnca-huano, to the south, make no mention of damage or casualties. At Concepcion Concep-cion a strong earth movement from east to west was felt for about three minutes at midnight. At Talachuano a tidal wave occurred, following the subsidence of w-hich the water level was lower than normal. Alarms wore sounded by the maritime mari-time authorities and firemen and workmen were called but to assist various craft from their dangerous positions, save quantities of valuable goods stored in the customs-house cellar and rescue the occupants of dwellings. Dispatches from the province of Atacama say that the center of the earthquake was an area roughly defined de-fined by Copiapo, Ovalle (in the province prov-ince of Coquimbo), Vallenar, Chanaral and San Fernado. Of these places, so far as known, Copiapo suffered most At Chanaral great tidal waves swept over the commercial section of the city, wrecking the postoffice among other buildings. It is reported that the city has been virtually abandoned aban-doned by the residents. All the affected areas are badly in need of relief. Communication with Santiago, Valparaiso and southrn Chile Is interrupted. |
