Show Helium Gas First The discovery of helium pas on the sun preceded its discovery in commercial com-mercial quantities on the earth by nbout 50 years. Lockyer in 1S0S found a new pas in the spectrum of fhe sun while studying t ho Humes shooting out from its surface. The pas was new bocause the color of the line representing it. when analyzed by the spectroscope, was distinctly dif-'reut dif-'reut fi om anything previously known. Twenty-eight years later traces of ihe same gas were found in uraninite. and for the first time scientists scien-tists knew that it was present on earth as well as in the sun. More years passed and it was discovered that helium was a product also of the disintegration of radium, says Popular Popu-lar Mechanics Magazine. Still later, during the World war. Kansas housewives house-wives luL:m to complain that the natural nat-ural fras supplied for cook ins was deficient de-ficient both in heat and light. A university uni-versity professor was sent to investi- gate and found in his samples that helium, a non in flammable, inert gas. was to blame.
