Show THE DRAMA OF SERVICE Have you ever noticed that people who are very sure of what they want travel so directly that there seems to be little of drama in their lives, while huge dramatic forces war through them as agents? Op in Westchester county, New York, last fall, there was an election for one county office that people were watching In and out of the state with keenest Interest. Westchester West-chester was one of the first three counties coun-ties In New York to plan a children's court. It decided on $10,000 for the judge's salary. Enter the war. On one side the old-timers old-timers who cujld not conceive that such a salary should he anything but a reward for the politically faithful. On . the other the folks who had dreamed and fought to get the state law through and the court established for the sake of the children, and who demanded that the training of the judge must be the first consideration. The battle was hot. The chosen candidate of many of the socially-minded socially-minded was Ruth Taylor of White Plains. The Republicans nominated her. The Democrats, forced by public pub-lic sentiment, nominated a man who took the job. rather than the salary, seriously. It was a Democratic year, but the friends of the children won, nevertheless. Miss Taylor, who calmly went on supervising expenditures of $450,000 annually, with a staff of 43, Is director of the county department of child welfare. wel-fare. At Vassar college she chose economics and sociology because she wanted t' Hpecialize in child welfare work. That led her to the study ol state laws arecting the protection ol children and young girls. "If a person starting in social work today has a good deal of courage and something of the spirit of pioneering," advises Ruth Taylor. "I should strongly strong-ly recommend her to try rural work. A worker must have the ability to work Indefiniteh with little encouragement encourage-ment or outside stimulus. However, there Is a tremendous field for usefulness. useful-ness. Many of the rural problems are barely discovered and entirely unsolved, un-solved, and much of the future welfare of the country depends on ability te understand and solve them " |
