Show JAPANESE RIRTHK I1WER Sacrume.ito, Feb. 14 Oalifornia't Japanese birth rate in 1 923 was slightly lower than in 1922, according accord-ing to estimates compiled by L. E. Ross, director of the State Bureau of vital statistics. The Japanese birth rate gained steadily until 1922 when it com-, com-, nienced to fall off. Here are the figures for the five years: 1919, 4458; 1920, 4971 ; 1921 5275; 1 922, 50C6; 1923, 4986. Tint while the Japanese birth rate Is practically stationery, the birth rate among Chinese in California has almost doubled in the past live years The number of births among Chinese in 1 923, based by Ross on reports for ten months is fixed at 800. This is a slight increase over the returns for 1922 but indicates that the Chin ese births are steadily increasing. Here are the figures from 1919 to 1923; 1919, 435; 1920, 504; 1921, fi09; 1922, 777; 1923, 800. Chinese women in California are bearing children in far greater numbers num-bers than Japanese women, according accord-ing to Ross. The number of married women of child-bearing age .is double dou-ble that of- the Chinese over the Japanese Jap-anese and of the Japanese married women of child-bearing age is double ' that of the white women. Among the Chinese G2J married women of child-bearing age out oi every 1000 in California gave birth to a child in 1923, whil eamong the Japanese only 317 married women oi child-bearing age, bore a child in 1922. Among the whites 125 women of child-bearing age out. every 1000 bore a child in 1922. One birth out of every eleven in California is in a Japanese home, and one person out of every fifty in the State is a Japanese, Ross says. The Japanese population of the State, Ross estimates from figure? at hand and compilations made for 1923 is 79,831. The Chinese population, he placed at 26.897 and the colored population, he estimates is 44,934. Contrary to common belief. Ross savs. the Japanese population iB not . increasing while both the number of negroes nnd Chinese show substantial substan-tial gains. |
