Show Mankind Constantly Engaged in the Process of Character Building By PROF. C. JUDSON HERRICK, University of Chicago. The brain of man has developed slowly out of the brain structure of lower animals. I have traced this progression from the fishes and amphibians, j through reptiles, birds and mammals. But somewhere in the history of j primate evolution an elaboration lias taken place, .leading to the facilita-! facilita-! tion of rapid learning and thinking. There is no truth in the old theory that man is a puppet whose acts are foreordained from without his own personality. Man is enned in character-building as a purposeful enterprise, and his own foreknowledge fore-knowledge of probable future consequences of his actions i.s a strieth biological process in one of its aspects. We have found place in our r.:;;iona system for purpos", imagination, imagina-tion, appreciation, sentiment, ethics, religion, faith, hope and charity I need these things in the serious bu.-:!:ess of living and I find prnfrmntu-n!!v prnfrmntu-n!!v that in proportion as they are integrally woven into mv life a a whole, .this life develops in satisfying patterns. |
