Show Patriotism Not Something We Can Conveniently Slip Off at Night Ey GEN. JOHN J. PERSHING, U. S. Army. We should understand that patriotism is not something we can conveniently slip off at night. When war comes and danger threatens it is easy enough to kindle its embers. But aftiv it is all over and peace is signed we forget our lack of foresight to meet war. I hope war never comes again. We may be accused of militarism, but it is far from our thoughts. I do not advocate a strong army or appropriations for a strong military mili-tary system the conception of that would be decried in a democracy such as this but I do urge that every American understand that he is an American and that the government under which he lives and properi he must defend if he is worth his salt. |
