Show "I Never Look Upon the Money I Earn as My Own, It Is Public Money" By FRITZ KREISLER, Famous Austrian Violinist. My present success means an opportunity to serve humanity. As for the financial end of my art to be quite truthful, I must admit that, aa my dear father did not believe in selling his medical knowledge, so it nauseates me to have to sell my musical ability. . I was born with music in my system. I knew musical scores instinctively instinc-tively before I knew my ABC's. It was a gift of Provideace. I did not acquire it. So I do not even deserve thanks for my music. Do you thank birds for flying in the sky, or do the birds charge you fees for singing in the woods ? Music is too sacred to be sold. And the outrageous prices tho musical celebrities charge today ! Truly, it is a crime against society. Well, I have my own way to solve this problem for myself, and to keep my conscience free from contamination : I never look upon the money I earn as my own. It is public money. It belongs to the public. It is only a fund entrusted to my care for proper disbursement. My beloved be-loved wife feels exactly the same way about these things as I do. In all these years of my so-called success in music, we have not built a home for eurselves. Between it and us stand all the homeless in the world. |
