Show Driver Should Practice Backing Out of Garage "When a motorist starts up or backs out of his garage with a lurch, a serious accident may be the result," says CharlC3 M. Hayes, president of the Chicago Motor club. "For this reason the simple art of starting should he practiced by the driver who aims to have a 'no accident' record. "The first precaution Is to see that the hand brake is set. The .clutch should then ' be thrown out. Tills saves wear on the battery and is also a safety measure. The starter then should be turned over with the Ignition Igni-tion off to get a supply of gas in the chambers. The cautious motorist, of course, will have his gears in neutral. His next move will be to shift to low or to reverse, as the case may be. and release the hand brake and apply the power gently. "In backing out of the garage the sounding of the horn is net sutliclent. The driver should make a practice of seeing that no one Is standing or walking near the rear of his car. The driver who observes such precautions will never become Involved in a starting start-ing accident |
