Show COUNTY OFFICERS OF LONG AGO The following bit of early history pertaining to Beaver county will be of interest to many of our readers. It -hows that all county offices at that -ime were filled by appointment, and only the collector and assessor re-' re-' ceived compensation for his service's: The first term of the probate court j of Beaver county was held in Sept-' Sept-' pr.-.br, 1S56, Lorin W. Babbitt, presi-! presi-! ding judge. Court convened for thv appointment of county officers. For sheriff, Orson Tyler. For clerk, Wilson G. Nowers. For constable, Lamoni L. Babbitt. For select men, James W. Huntsman, Hunts-man, Ephriam Tompkinson and Simon F. Howd. For justice of the peace, . J- M. Davis. For notary public, Ross R. Rogers. For assessor and collector, John Ashworth. For treasurer, C. Perry Liston. Fot road supervisor, Charles Carter. Cart-er. For fence viewers, James P. Anil. An-il. irson, and James Duke. For surveyor, Edward W. Thompson. Thomp-son. For poundkeeper, James Farrer. A franchise for a sawmill and gristmill grist-mill was granted to Lorin W. Babbitt and Wilson G- Nowei-s, the mill site ; to be located half a mile north of the town plat. A bounty of 25c was ordered to be paid on wolf scalps. All officers' services to be gratuitous, gratuit-ous, with the exception of the assessor assess-or and the collector, whose compensation compensa-tion was fixed at 5 per cent, on all collections.
