Show I WRONG 1 There are a large number of men -in this country classed as unemployed. unem-ployed. We don't mean men who won't work, or those who are continually con-tinually hunting for an excuse not to work, but real working men without with-out jobs. ! Some ears ago nearly all laborers labor-ers were expected to work ten hours' a day then the eight hour day was put in effect in all lines of work. One of the big arguments in its favor was that there would be employment for! more men and union men were not allowed to work over the eight hours; then a penalty was put on ; :he employer who worked his help over eight hours per day. In that' way the work was given to more and more men. Compare that with the situa'ion today and ycu don't have to go out of town for the comparison.. Many men are working long hours ovcr-j time and complain if that privilege is denied them, and yet there are men out of work. The railroad lays off twenty to thirty per cent of its employees and ; yet pays over-time enough to have ! kept all those old employees on the job at straight time. There should be no over-time allowed al-lowed by either the employer or the employee, as long as there is an idle man in this country who is able or capable of doing the job. |
