Show OIL PROSPECTS AND DEVELOPMENT IN UTAH GEOLOGISTS AND LAYMEN GATHER AT WELL Green River, March 29 Attention Atten-tion of geologists and engineers gathered at Moab to witness the test of the Midwest-Utah Southern well on the Cane Creek structure was deflected de-flected for the time being to the Mar land well, three miles southeast or here, where on Sunday a strong showing show-ing of oil was struck at a depth of approximately twenty-four hundrec fee. This morning representatives o.' the Midwest, the General Petroleum, the Standard Southern, the Associated Associa-ted of California and Snowden . McSweeney motored over the Grane county barrens from Moab to investigate inves-tigate the importance of the showing found in the Marland well. At once it became apparent that the Marland had no intention of either "kidding" itself or the public or of concealing anything from members of the oi' profession. Immediately upon the arrival of General Manager Rolls o! Denver, Colo., on the noon train op erations were resumed at the well A tapeline was run into the hole and the exact depth proved to be 2401.5 feet. Several balers of liquid containing considerable oil and some water were dumped, after which the drilling was resumed. In a few minutes the bit was driven approxi mately six inches into the sand. Cut tings of the oilmaking formation showed it to be a soft white sand. Ealing was then resumed, when Rolls decided that the showing of gas and oil was so strong that it war unwise to drill farther until a gate valve was secured and adjusted With Superintendent Stafay from the Sturm Drilling company, which has the contract for the test, Rolls" left for Cisco to see what equipment was on hand at the warehouse there He and Stafay plan to return here tomorrow with the needed valve-gate valve-gate when drilling will be resumed into the objective Moenkopi. Officials Offici-als of the Marland feel encouraged over the showing struck at a depth of two thousand four hundred and one feet, although the quantity or water seemed to increase as the sane" was entered. It is believed that the amount of oil encountered proves that the faulted anticline is a trai for oil and that when the objective Moenkapi is entered, commercia production may be found. Geologist: are of the opinion that the bit has pierced the Shinarump, overlying the Moenkopi and of the Permian age although this is highly problematical The well is drilled on an upthrown fault block a thousand feet north o' an east-west fissure that displaces the formation from thirteen hundred to fourteen hundred feet.
