President Woodrow Wilson cancelled can-celled the speaking dates remaining on his schedule when he reached this ci;y and turned hack toward Washington. Washing-ton. Mr. Wilson was ill most of Thursday Thurs-day night and the decision to return at once to ilie capital was readied Just before his train arrived in Wichita Friday morning. The president presi-dent himself wanted to continue his speaking program, but Dr. Grayson would not permit it. The presidential train did not pull Into the station at Wichita, where a large crowd was waiting to welcome the president. Although he wanted to at least greet Ihe people here, Dr. Grayson would not permit him to leave his private car. The president's train left Wichita at 11 o'clock, but before leaving the president issued a statement state-ment in which he expressed his regret re-gret at being unable to talk to the people peo-ple of Wichita and Kansas, declaring declar-ing it was a real disappointment to him. The president acted under orders from his physician, Dr. Gary T. Grayson, Gray-son, who said in a formal statement that Mr. Wilson was suffering from "nervous exhaustion," and that while his condition was not alarming, a considerable con-siderable period of rest would be "necessary for his recovery." After a few days at the capital, the president may go to some secluded se-cluded rest resort for a complete vacation vaca-tion from the official cares which have occupied his attention continuously for many months. A plan for Mr. Wilson to go to New-York New-York to welcome King Albert of Belgium, Bel-gium, virtually has been abandoned, but the president expects to receive the king later at the White House. All other engagements for the immediate imme-diate future have been canceled. Although outwardly the president, had appeared to be standing well Hie hard ordeal of more than three weeks of travel and speechmaking, it became known that for some days he has been much fatigued by the confinement of his special train, interrupted only by brief stops, which have been spent mostly in riding through crowds and speaking to audiences so large as to require all his exerition to make his voice heard. A Strenuous Tour. Mr. WTlson had made nearly forty speeches since he left Washington September 3, and had spent all but about half a dozen nights on the train. Five addresses remained on his uncompleted un-completed schedule. After the two on Friday, he was to have spoken in Little Lit-tle Itock and Memphis on Saturday and in Louisville Monday morning, returning re-turning to Washington on Tuesday. It was declared by members of the president's party that one of the ordeals or-deals which seemed to be most trying try-ing on his nerves has been the automobile auto-mobile parades through the cities lie has visited. He has traveled ninny miles standing in his car and waving ids hat in response to the cheers of welcome. This feature of the trip apparently has been very tiring to Mrs. Wilson also, who has accompanied accompan-ied liiin wherever he went, and who during the last few days has shown evidences of being anxious for the strain to end. In order to avoid the crowds, the president has made several minor shifts in his schedule. At San Diego. Cal.. lie went aboard his train immediately imme-diately after The informal dinner given giv-en in his honor instead of remaining for the night, and when he reached Los Angeles the next day he tried in vain to slip quietly to his hotel for Sunday's rest. Later in the day tit Los An-'eles he arranged to take the air in a brief automobile ride by sending out personally per-sonally and hiring a taxicab instead of using the conspicuous flag draped car that had been provided for his use. In a number of other cases since then the president has tried to curtail his program and has seized every opportunity op-portunity to get a moment's relaxation. relaxa-tion. His train was stopped for more than an hour after leaving Pueblo. Colo., while Mr. and Mrs. Wilson took a long w alk down a dusty count inroad in-road by the Arkansas river. The last speech made by the president presi-dent on his tour was at Pueblo. Cob'., and was a masterpiece of eloq-ience. |
