Show Utah Medical Society Calls Volunteers The Utah County Medical So- ciety wilh headquarters at Pro- vo has promised to furnish the United States Government with four physicians and surgeons for service in the army. The Government has requested one out of every seven of the physi- cians of the United States for such service and four is the quota for the Utah Society. Beaver county has only one member of this society, Dr. H. C. Hunter of Milford. Dr. Hunter has received a letter giving the following method adopted by the Society for the selection and remuneration of those who must give up their practice to serve their country: "The United States Government has requested the services of one out of every seven physicians, which means that four should be furnished from Utah county, or the region covered cov-ered by the Utah County Medical Society. "It is necessary that these physicians phy-sicians enlist in the Medical Reserve Corps immediately, that they may be trained for the special war requirements. require-ments. But the question now before us is, who will do so. "In order to determine" who should serve the government in this capacity capac-ity a meeting was held, as per your notification, and after discussing the subject very thoroughly and earnestly, earnest-ly, the following resolution was passed : " 'Resolved : " 'That we as medical practitioners practition-ers in the region covered by the Utah County Medical Society, furnish furn-ish for the Medical Officers Reserve Corps of the United States Army, four -of our number, to serve the Government, during the present war period. " 'These four men are to enlist voluntarily vol-untarily before July 4th, 1917. " 'In case any of these fail to be accepted into the service, or if not enough enlist to supply our quota, then it is resolved, that " 'We supply the number required by drawing by lot from a complete list of medical practitioners, in the region mentioned, enough names to fill the requirements; and if any of these fail to be accepted we draw again, until we have supplied our quota, i. e.. one out of every seven practitioners. " 'Resolved further that we, the undersigned practitioners, hereby pledge ourseles, by special promissory promis-sory notes, or by signed agreement to pay an amount sufficient to give each phsician from our district, accepted ac-cepted in the U. S. service, $100.1)0 per month, for a period of three (3) years, if he is in the service thai ! long. If incapacitated for professional profess-ional work or should die while in the services, the payments are to continue con-tinue to him or his estate for one year after disability or death. " 'This will require the payment I of approximately $20.00. per month from each man staying at home. " 'You are of course aware of the fact that in enlisting in the Oflieers' S Reserve Corps you draw a salary of from $2000 to $3t00 a year, accord" iug to your rank, which in addition : to the amount guaranteed would make it possible for some to go without with-out much sacrifice. ".Four men are asked for and .must enlist before July 4th, 1917. If at that time the required number have not enlisted, we shall proceed to draw, according to the above resolution. res-olution. "Unless we hoar from you before June 27th. as to what you want to do. whether to enlist or to wait for the drawing, we shall have to pay you a personal visit. "Please give us your answer without with-out delay. Yours very truly. "K. W. Taylor. "A. J. Stewart. "W. T. Hasler. "The Committee." |
