Show BUY LIBERTY BONDS AND SAVE 1,000,000 LIVES To the Patriotic Citizens of Beaver County: One year ago on April 6, our nation, on behalf of civil-m civil-m ization, entered into the greatest war in history, side by side with our allies who have proved and are daily proving prov-ing themselves, heroes in the great cause. During the past year millions of OUR BOYS, the noblest no-blest types of American manhood, have sprung to the defense de-fense of America and all that America has stood for, and for which our fathers have lived and died during a century cen-tury and a half. The spirit with which those heroes of the past toiled to conquer an untamed continent ' and cheerfully gave their lives in its wildernesses and on its battlefields that PEACE, PROSPERITY and, above all, LIBERTY should be our heritage, shines again in brilliant bril-liant light in the souls of our men who have once more of-' of-' fered the same great sacrifice, for the same high purpose, pur-pose, in this moment of our country's peril. In this splendid sacrifice of these men, who are today fighting and dying on the fields of France, lies OUR SURETY that this great heritage which has been left us shall not be taken from us OUR SURETY that our homes and hearthstones, monuments to our civilization, shall never be desecrated by the feet of Teuton, Turk or Bulgar OUR SURETY that this struggle for civilization civiliza-tion will be fought and won by American men and women, wom-en, but not on American soil. At what sacrifice are they doing this for us? Leaving fathers and mothers, families and friends, homes and hopes of future fortune, with their lives laid on the Altar of Christian Civilization, they have answered Christ's command to "Leave all and follow Him" carrying the battle bat-tle across three thousand miles of ocean that the enemy may not carry the battle to us. ( This is the spirit in our boys and this the sacrifice they offer for America. What then of us who are enjoying the gifts purchased at such a price? Shall we measure up to the standards set by our men on the battle front today? to-day? Our soldiers can only be efficient in the battle in exact proportion as we at home are efficient in caring for their welfare and supplying them with the means to fight. Their chance in coming safely through the battle is in - great measure dependent on the intensity with which we devote our labor and money to their support. Who of us is there so impoverished of soul as to urge our men to battle bat-tle in our defense and then withhold from them the support sup-port so vital to their safety and success. If such there be, let us find him out and bring down upon him the right- , eous condemnation of the loyal citizens of our country. There is not one of our soldiers, but who, had they disregarded dis-regarded their country's call, might be enjoying the "same prosperity and comfort at home that we enjoy, but at the cost of their self respect and their country's esteem this they scorned to do and gave up all for us. If we, then, are true to ourselves, OUR BOYS, and OUR COUNTRY, we will not hesitate to give our labor and our money that they may not have made such sacrifice sacri-fice in vain. Speed in our work and our response to the nation's call for money is the thing most necessary. Speed will bring us VICTORY and bring it the sooner, speed will save the lives of thousands of our brave soldiers, for delay means the sacrifice of our allies, of whom every one that is lost must be replaced by an American soldier. The administration can only work as fast as we furnish the money and material. The THIRD LIBERTY LOAN is called for April 6th. Our Government asks for $3,000,000,000, of which Beaver Bea-ver county is allotted $51,000 and we are asked to subscribe sub-scribe it in two weeks. Let us show our SPEED, let us do it in less, let each one ask himself not how little MUST he, but how much CAN he subscribe. Let us put Utah's star at the head of those on the honor flag at Washington and our Country at the head of the honor list at home. BE AMERICANS R. H. STRICKLAND, Chairman Third Liberty Loan, Beaver County, Utah. |
