Show lUSES OF THE ARMY INSIGNA To clear up the puzzling question as to just what the various inslgna worn by returned soldiers mean, the western department authorities offer of-fer the following explanation: One gold chevron on the lower left sleeve Indicates that the soldier wearing it has seen six months' active ac-tive service overseas, "In the theatre of operations." For each additional six months, he wears one additional gold chevron chev-ron on his left sleeve One gold chevron bn the lower right sleeve of a soldier indicates that the soldier has been wounded or gassed in the theatre of operations It may mean more than one wound if all the wounds were received at the same time. But if the soldier was wounded twice at different I times and in different engagements he is entitled to wear an additional , gold chevron. One blue chevorn on the lower i left sleeve indicates more than three . months and less than six months ! service in the theatre of operations. , j One silver chevron on the lower left sleeve indicates that the soldier sol-dier wearing it has seen six months' service in this country or as the war department expressly puts it, "outside the theatre of operations." An additional silver chevron is authorized au-thorized for every additional six months' service "outside the theatre of operations." One red or "scarlet" chevron, to be worn on the left sleeve between, the shoulder and the elbow, indicates indi-cates that the soldier wearing It has '-een honorably discharged. One silver star in the samp riosi-t.'on riosi-t.'on indicates that the soldier was among the first fifty thousand men to join Pershing overseas. Overseas caps may be worn by returned re-turned troops until they are discharged dis-charged from the army. Sam Browne belts, the type worn ' by English officers and much used by Americans in the American expeditionary expe-ditionary force, are prohibited in 'his country. Divisional insigna may be worn until demobilization. This latter insigna is to be worn on the left steove at the shoulder. |
