Show Suggestions by Dr. W. E. Carroll, Professor of Animal Husbandry Husband-ry Utah Agricultural Col. The full utilization of all fields after the harvest is extremely necessary neces-sary this year. Much good feed material ma-terial is left in corners, along ditch banks, or lost in the harrest. On grain fields poultry or turkeys will clean the fields best, but these are often of-ten not available. Hogs will secure most of the waste food. Horses and cattle will get the heads of the grain but they cannot pick up the separate separ-ate kernels. Sheep make good gleaners. In the best fields much good feed material can be secured after harvest. The beet tops may also be kept for winter feeding by siloing. If this is done a shallow pit should be made with a scraper or plow. The tops should then be placed in this pit, tramped down well and then covered with straw and dirt. A more complete utilization utiliza-tion of the beet tops is secured when the tops are siloed than when they are fed on the field. More labor attends at-tends siloing, however. a |
