Show Another Big Show By Star Director "A director is a notoriously unappealing un-appealing personality to the average ave-rage movie-goer. It is a known fact that about the only "names" worth advertising in connection with a film are those of the stars and important im-portant featured players. But one director has risen to such a high plane, has had so much written about him, has been talked about so much, that he has become u j personality to be reckoned with. "His name is Frank Capra." I Thus, in the words of C. L. Firmage, manager of the Firmage theatre, we come across an inter-' inter-' esling point. It seems that Mr. ' Capra, since directing "Lady fur a ' Day," "Broadway Hill" and the i now immortal "It Happened One ! Night," is being regarded by movie audiences as something approaching ap-proaching Garbo, so far as fame is concerned. Showing Sunday and Monday at the Firmage theatre, is Mr. Capra's latent directorial effort, ' Columbia's "Mr. Deeds Goes To Town," which stars Gary Cooper and features Jean Arthur. "When Capra gave the world (Continued on last pago.) Another Big Show (Continued from first page) 'It Happened One Night,' " says Mr. Firmage, "he gave it a picture that was perfect in every department depart-ment of entertainment. It was a highly imaginative production, carefully conceived, charmingly carried out. It wasn't the sort of picture you have to sell to the public. pub-lic. Its audiences were its best boosters. "That's the way it is with all Capi-a productions. He makes them so appealing that a movie fan can't walk out of a theatre without talking talk-ing favorably about them. Then there's generally one outstanding scene in each picture that strikes the spectator so forcefully he must rush out and tell his friends about it. Frank Capra means an enjoyable enjoy-able evening in the movies, and people want to know when his pictures pic-tures are around. o |
