Show nSJL'ivestocle fcx.$ituatiOELJ ffiM'MJGHTWjfe r ' Los Angeles Union Stock yards, November 6 Efforts of western cattlemen to further improve the quality of beef production was emphasized em-phasized at the Great Western Livestock show held In Los Angeles last week. High quality, registered Hereford bulls were purchased by commercial cattle operators at substantial prices, ranging upward to $1,000 each. We hear of a New Mexico cattleman cattle-man who has purchased the best herd of bulls he could procure along with a sizable group of registered re-gistered Hereford cows for the production of high quality feeder calves. This trend is significant. All too many range cattlemen in days gone by have looked upon registered register-ed beef cattle as a hobby for the other fellow, instead of offering a practical means to improve the quality and earning . power of range cattle. Fortunately for the cattle industry, good, registered bulls and registered cows can be purchased at prices which put the purebred stock within the means of every cattleman. It has been the function of the management of the Great Western Livestock show to aid in bringing1 together the breeder of high quality, registered breeding stock and the range man. Through the display of prime, grain-fed steers, the value of well-bred well-bred sires and dams has been demonstrated in a very practical manner. The auction sale of registered Hereford bulls, held at the Great Western Livestock show last week, was the largest consignment sale ever held in the west. The fact that there were many cattlemen cattle-men who went home without being able to buy as many high quality bulls as they wanted indicates that Ihere is a very broad market demand de-mand for breed improvers. The manner in which the Los Angeles packer buyers, retailers and eating places bid was tremendously tremen-dously encouraging to everyone interested in improving the quality of western grown and western fed livestock. One noted resfcaurant owner said that as long as he did all his business in the west, he would serve western fiAl beef exclusively ex-clusively in his dining rooms. That spirit is of vast encouragement to the western livestock industry. |
