Show Search Continues For New Entrance At Lehman Cave While excavating in Li.-hman cave for a new entrance to the caves workmen this week uncover-eed uncover-eed a human skull in the cave which was four feet under the present pre-sent level of the cave. The skull is believed to be that of an Indian, and from the formation forma-tion of the cave in which it was found is believed tt-j ai ni-Veral hundred years old. .Several ribs were found near the skull. Finding of the skull in the caves is proof that at one time there was another entrance to the many caves in that vicinity, and probably some distance from the present entrance. The mountains there contain many caves, many of which are as yet unexplored and which in time may yield other evidence of an early Indian or prehistoric race. It is believed that the entrance to the caves must have been covered up several hundred years ago, and the va-t and beautiful caverns were only discovered by chance when a horse and rider broke through the outer thin crust of earth over the present entrance. The opening into the cave was later enlarged and, as at present, the caves became available through descending into the caves from the opening down a series of ladders and later steps. An attempt is being made to construct a new opening which will be more nearly level with the caves. Ely Record. |
