Show Bombs and Shells May Be Employed I in War on Insects WASHINGTON. Man's war against insects literally will be a real one, with real guns, bullets, "shrapnel," "bombs" and loud explosions, If a new way of exterminating these enemies, described de-scribed In a patent granted here to Otto V. Huffman of Bedford Hills, N. Y., works out as well as the Inventor In-ventor claims. Shells loaded with charges of powerful Insecticides are to be shot from guns to explode into clouds of deadly dust, to envelop trees and fields and make short work of the Insects. In the same way, bombs or sticks of Insecticide are to be exploded ex-ploded like dynamite to disseminate throughout the entire surrounding area an ultra-fine Insect-destroying dust. Can Use Shotguns. AccordLng to the Inventor, ordinary ordi-nary shotgun shells can be loaded In the usual way with compressed wads or slugs of Insecticides, Instead In-stead of lead shot. When such a shell Is fired, he says, the force of explosion projects the wad or slug of insecticide like a bullet, except that after the slug has traveled a certain distance it breaks down Into a cloud of ultra-fine dust. At what distance this breakup will occur depends upon the makeup make-up of the slug or wad Its compactness compact-ness and moisture content. But this distance can be . calculated, and shells can be loaded and marked to indicate how far the Insecticide will travel before It explodes into a cloud. Getting the Range. Armed with an ordinary shotgun and as many rounds of these shells as necessary, the exterminator would go about the business of warring war-ring on insects something like this: Say It is a tree he wants to rid of pests. lie first Judges the range to the top of the tree. Then he loads the gun with the proper she, aims and shoots. Tiie slug of Insecticide Insec-ticide explodes right over the tree. |
