Show fflVESTOCN SITUATION xis seen at the jees Union ftock &nrds Los Angeles Union Stock Yards. July 19 Increased cattle receipts at the Los Angeles Union Stock yards during the past week met more active demand and prices have held generally steady. Meat packers are beginning to receive their subsidy checks from the government and are adjusting their buying to the new order of the Office of Price Administration. Administra-tion. Many cattlemen are seriously going into their breJeding herds, taking advantage of present favorable prices for cows as a means of culling their herds of non-iproducers, boarders and off-quality off-quality females. One of the largest larg-est ranches in California has marketed eight carloads of such cows on the Los Angeles market during the past two weeks and j most of these cows, good quality j Herefords, sold at Jl.3.50 a cwt. or j abcut S150 per head. One Hereford Here-ford breeder marketed a 20-year i (Continued on last prtge) I V LIVESTOCK NOTES (Continued from page 1) cow a few days ago and received about $120 for her on the market. Inasmuch as the government subsidy of $1.10 a cwt. on live weight of cattle purchased by packers is regardless of quality, it appears that the subsidy payment pay-ment are strengthening the cheaper cheap-er grades of cattle the most. Packers receive a cash subsidy of $1.30 a cwt. liveweight on hogs and $.95 a cwt. on sheep and lambs. Choice steers last week sold up to $16.25 a cwt., and medium to good steers, including grassers, brought $14.50 to $15.75, common on down to $12 and under. Common Com-mon to good heifers are bringing $12 to $15, some thin heifers down to $11 and under; medium to good cows ,$11 to $13.50, canners and common from $7 to $10.50 a cwt.; bulls mostly $10.50 to $12.50; calves and vealers mostly $13 to $15. Hog prices are holding about steady with the bulk of good and choice 190- to 250npound weights $14.80 to $15.10, extreme top $15.25 at the close of the week. Good and choice sows are quoted at $13 to $13.50. 'Good and choice wooled lambs are quoted at $15 to $15.50. |
