Show HERE AND THERE i (By Hucares) I Italy has had an adverse period i on the battlefront says Pivmier I Mussolini to say nothing of the I petriod of adverses he has suffer-j suffer-j ed on the front page. At this moment, in some 907 training centers, reaching into every state of the union, 19,000 young Americans are being initiated initi-ated into the third and final session ses-sion of the 1940-41 Civil Aeronautics Aeronau-tics Administration civilian pilot training program; 15,000 are starting the preliminary work which leads to private pilots certificates, cer-tificates, and an additional 4000 are enrolled in the secondary ! classes which carry the trainees through a .more advanced state of flight training. In addition, to training new pilots, the CPTP has enormously increased the number of qualified instructors by i means of refresher courses, etc., j which has great bearing on the ! potential number that it is possi-j possi-j ble to train. It is doubtful that, should we give this "our all", all the combined efforts of the Axis would pale into insignificance. It is conceeled that these young men are not capable of entering combat com-bat service immediately, but it may be noted that the army air corps rejects, or "washouts", as they are called, are 39 percent of its cadets having no previous flying fly-ing experience; whereas only lei percent of CPTP cadets are "washed out''. In other words, the civil training program would eliminate the time and expense of the regular corps in weeding out the unfit. "Unusual weather prevailed over most of Utah last week" Californians, please note that, in spite of the frequent usage of the above phrase, you have no copyright copy-right on it. We are only infringing infring-ing on the type of weather and not the excuse. One New Deal "economist" says it is a mistake for people to save money. He is right, and the government should set the example ex-ample by firing all the $1 per year men and substitute $2 per year men. The quality might be better. The man who says you can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, was evidently living in single bliss. It is rumored that he revised his tstimate after attaining at-taining marital bliss. Not all of the people in Germany Ger-many or occupied territories want to work or fight for Germany. To avoid both, they have . perfected perfect-ed means of faking accidents and disability that completely fool the German authorities. Every little bit helps, says we. We are not trying to reform anything or anybody. ... But why does Idaho have an electric power rate of two cents per kilowatt kilo-watt hour, less than half the Utah rate? It may also be noted that Idahoans use two and one half times as much electricity as Utahns. Wo arc elated that Governor Herbert B. Maw is aware of this condition, and is studying methods to adjust this little item, which has hen largely responsible, among other things, for keeping Heavy industry out of this state. ' From the accent of the girls making up the dance draftettes in Washington for the benefit of the lonely(?) draftee, as shown in the newsreels, we are inclined to believe the rebels have finally taken the national capital, 7fi years after the Civil war ended!. Milestones along the path to something or other: Colonfl Stoopnaglo stops his Quixie-doodle program March 2.1, but is expected expect-ed back on the air in August. With his Quixie-doodle, wo presume! pre-sume! Hard to believe department: Jack Benny signed a contract that will pay him $17,f00 per week, turning down an offer of $25,000, which would have changed his network and sponsors. (Note: Mr. Penny pays his cast from th'. above sum). Gary Cooper, one of our favorites, favor-ites, is currently playing the role of Alvin York, hero of World War I. . . . The more we learn of I,n-raine I,n-raine Day, the more1 we are inclined in-clined to believe she is indeed a remarkable young w'irman. A press notice now states that Miss Pay would prov an efficient secretary, as she can copy 100 words per minute in shorthand.... Tom Harmon, football star, soon treks to Hollywood, to make a movie and collect 13 "grand" for doing it. M |
