Show -.SituatiOiXvl Los Angeles, California, March 22, 1941 With every indication pointing towards increasing demand de-mand for meat foods during the period of the present emergency in the United States, it would stem that the livestock industry is going to play an immensely important im-portant part in the defense program. pro-gram. The old saying "an army marches on its stomach", means that soldiers must have meat, and the United States soldiers consume con-sume a large amount of beef. Fortunate it is that the United States is in an unusually favorable position to supply meat foods both to soldiers and civilians. The most recent crop report issued by the United States Department of Agriculture shows that the March condition of western ranges is the highe-st in just about 11 years. The winter has been mild in almost al-most every section, and there has been more dry feed available for cattle anil sheep than usual. Arizona Ari-zona and California have very favorable range conditions, due to the heavy rains which have been followed by warm, growing weather. During the last week or two, heavy snow storms have brought much needed moisture to the Rocky mountain country, where there had been considerable fear of drouth conditions in the spring months. Some of the northern states are still likely to be short of stock water and irrigation water due to the subnormal amount of snow in the mountain areas. The cattle market continues to carry a firm undertone. Choice Wyoming-fed steers scored $12.10 at tho Los Angeles Union Stock yards, the highest price paid on the Los Angeles market since the fall of ID'10. There was some minor reaction in the cattle, market mar-ket last week, bu(, competent market mar-ket observers believe this weakness weak-ness temporary as there appears to be tio hurdensom'e supplies of cuttle in sight for some time to I come, due to the lateness of the California grass season. The bog market also has a (trnng undertone! and choice grain-fed butcher hogs have reached $,;& a cwt., with the bulk of goo. Old crop, fed lambs in full fleece are considered quotable up to $11 a cwt. The spring lamb movement from California is later than usual, but the abundance of green feed makes it quite certain that California's early lambs will be fat and of choice quality. M |
