Show FARM NOTES BY GOLDEN L. STOKER Beaver County Agent Do Dry Cleaning at Home While Weather is Good Now is the time to do the necessary neces-sary dry cleaning for the family while the weather is still good, says Miss Ellen Agren, extension specialist in home management at Utah State Agricultural college. Cleaning can be done successfully success-fully and with comparative safety ! if a cleaning solvent which evaporates evapor-ates slowly, is specially prepared for dry cleaning, and is sold on the market as a "cleaning solvent" is used. The solvent is used for dry cleaning in much the same manner as water is used for wet cleaning of clothing. All dry cleaning should be done out of doors away from fire and in the shade. Solvents meeting Stoddard's Stod-dard's specifications should be used. This type will burn but is not explosive under ordinary atmospheric at-mospheric Conditions. Cleaning should be done on a clear sunny day. There is more danger of fire from static sparks when it is rainy and humidity is low. Miss Agren advises against the use of gasoline because of its explosive ex-plosive qualities. Use of a washing wash-ing machine is also discouraged, since fricton may cause a spark which might cause fire or explosion. explo-sion. Dry-cleaned garments should be hung out of doors until all solvent sol-vent has evaporated and should be dry before being taken indoors and pressed. Benzene soaps used with the solvent sol-vent will aid in the cleaning process, pro-cess, especially .for light colored (Continued on last page) FARMJOTES (Continued from first page) or very soiled clothing. Solvents are very irritating to most skins, so the use of rubber gloves while cleaning is recommended. Cleaning solvent will not remove re-move starch, sugar, blood or perspiration pers-piration spots. Outline these stains with a basting thread, wet the garment with solvent, place the stain or spot with the right side of the fabric on a towel. Wet a small piece of cloth with water and sponge the spot on the wrong side of the fabric until it is removed, re-moved, Miss Agren advises. Use plenty of solvent. Much success in dry cleaning at home depends on using a sufficient a-mount. a-mount. Three vessels, each containing one to two gallons or more of sol- vent should be used. Benzine soap' may be used in the first, while the I other two should be for rinsing.1 Miss Agren advises reference to Circular No. 95.
