Show New U. P. Train, Model of Luxury, To Begin Runs The world's largest and fastest long distance streamline train "City of Los Angeles" has been completed in Chicago and will pass through Milford early Friday morning on its way to Los Angeles. The streamliner will go into service between Los Angeles and Chicago on a 39 34 hours schedule May 15. The streamliner will depart from Los Angeles and Chicago terminals each five days. Departing dates from Los Angeles will be at 3:45 p.m., on the 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, and on the last day of the month. From Chicago the train will depart at 6:15 p.m. (Central time) on the 2nd, 7th, 12th, 17th, 22nd and 27th of every month. The streamliner will arrive in Los Angeles at 8 a.m. and at Chicago at 9:30 a.m., on the second day following fol-lowing departure. The "City of Los Angeles" consists con-sists of nine revenue cars and two power cars. It has a total capacity capa-city for 170 passengers; 84 in the Pullman sleeping cars and 86 in the coaches. The train includes four Pullman cars, two coaches, a dining-lounge car and a mail-baggage-express car and is com pletely air-conditioned throughout. The sleek, yellow-sided, brown-bellied brown-bellied streamliner, which resembles resem-bles a huge projectile on wheels, is powered with two diesel engines with a combined 2100 horsepower capable of speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour, is full standard width and approximately half the weight of the conventional railroad rail-road passenger train of the same size. The two power cars, their trucks, engines and other equipment, equip-ment, represent approximately one-third of the total weight. Non-explosive Non-explosive distillate oil is used in the diesel engines. The engine in the first power car is 16 cylinders, 1200 horsepower, and the engine in the second power car is 12 cylin-deer, cylin-deer, 900 horsepower. Each engine en-gine is directly connected to a generator providing electric current cur-rent for eight traction motors, four in each power car. The tandem tan-dem arranged power plant is so deviled that either or both of the engines may be used at any time. Control of the entire power plant centers in the cab above and in front of the engine in the first car. A newly designed method of articular ar-ticular between the power cars and also between the other cars of the train are among the innovations innova-tions of the "City of Los Angeles" and the two power cars, while articulated arti-culated to each other, are readily detachable from the balance of the train. Three of the Pullman sleeping cars are of the 11 section type (11 upper and 11 lower berths). Oue section in each car is of extra (Continued on last page) o New Speed Train (Continued .from first nage) length and especially designed for tall persons. One of the 11 section cars is of the so-called "enclosed" type that permits each section to be closed by sliding aluminum panels so as to become practically a compartment. The other two 11 section cars are of the "open" type incorporating new devices and facilities fa-cilities for comfort and attractiveness. attractive-ness. In all cases passengers cj-cupying cj-cupying upper berths may ascend on a folding stairway which is left in position all night. The fourth Pullman car, first of its kind ever to be used in western transcontinental transconti-nental or streamline train service, consists of seven bedrooms and two compartments. The arrangement arrange-ment of the bedrooms is such that they can be used in pairs as an extra large drawing room by opening open-ing and folding back the novel door and partition arrangement. The diner-lounge with its two ccktnil sections, represents a complete com-plete departure in dining car design. de-sign. Table arrangements are such that four persons may occupy each table. Deep-cushioned chairs and couches, carpets, draperies and curtains of colorful designs are new innovations. The upholstery is in red and green and the walls of the car are French gray with natural decorative effects. The two' coaches are on the rear of the train, the last car having in its fin-like tail an enclosed buffet buf-fet kitchen for service of meals and refreshments to coach passengers. passen-gers. Concealed tables used either for service of meals or for writing, reading or card-playing are recessed re-cessed into the backs of the seats, all of which are reclining and adjustable. ad-justable. Windows throughout the train are of extra width and all are of double shatter proof plate glass. The train is completely insulated against atmospheric conditions and outside noises. Externally the train appears to be one long unit, the connection betwen the cars being entirely concealed. In addition to its regular crew the "City of Los Angeles" will have a stewardess, who is a registered regis-tered graduate nurse, to act as hostess and generally assist passengers. pas-sengers. There will be two all-wave radio receiving sets on the train, one in the diner-lounge and the second in the coach buffet with a connecting loud speaker in the second coach. A telephone system enabling the crew and engineers to at all times communicate with each other is another added development. Cheyenne S:30 a.m. the next day, Ogden 5:45 p.m., Salt Lake City 6:30 p.m. and Los Angeles 8:00 a.m. the second day.
