Show With the Colors From TSgt. Gordon W. Murdock Ephrata Army Air Base, Washington, Wash-ington, July 8, 1942. The Milford News, Milford, Utah. Dear Mr. Williams. Again I take my typewriter in hand to bring you a few episodes taken from the day-by-day diary of one of "your soldier boys." Since the last literary effort of j mine appeared in The News, a lot , more has happened which may, or may not, prove interesting to all those readers interested in the boys in the services. We are now located in the wide open spaces near Ephrata, Washington, Wash-ington, some 125 miles from Spokane. Spo-kane. It is very dusty, the wind blows every evening, and the camp is located in the middle of a sagebrush flat. The top of the ,brush was knocked off by bulldozers bull-dozers and, though hundreds jof loads of gravel were hauled, it is still a very dirty camp. You can sit on the top of your bunk and shine your shoes like a million within 15 minutes they look like h . Ephrata! There just isn't anything any-thing to add other than no recreation, rec-reation, no people, and fewer buildings. The population, including includ-ing cows, horses and sheep, is approximately ap-proximately 750. There are three girls here and I admit they do their best trying to dance with 000 soldiers at the USO dances, but it just isn't enough. The soldiers at this base did do a grand and noble deed the early part of this week. A very large, in, fact the largest, sage fire ever known in the history of this part of the state, broke out about 11 miles from here and soon threatened threat-ened the whole town. Thirty-five hundred soldiers volunteered to fight and barely quenched the flames before the whole town went up. The local fire department depart-ment lost its only fire truck trying try-ing to keep ahead of the flames. As I said before, there is no recreation rec-reation here, so if any one of the many readers would like to drop me a line or two, I would be very pleased to try giving an interesting interest-ing reply. It is a morale booster j to receive letters. How about? Another promotion for yours truly the first of the month. Was made technical sergeant and now have only one grade to go before I am at the top of the non-commissioned ladder. On to Tokyo and Berlin! TSgt. Gordon W. Murdock. 372nd Bomb. Sq.
