Show Washington Comment Goldsmith's "Deserted Village" had nothing on our nation's capital capi-tal over the past week-end. The ; town went tp New York practically en masse for the opening of the world's fair out on the Flushing meadows. Congress shook the dust of Capitol hill off its shoes, brushed brush-ed its morning coats, striped trousers and silk hats (if any!), and moved on the Empire state, 700 hundred strong, complete with wives and hhildren (also, if any!) Our diplomatic contingent had to go too, of course, for official reasons, rea-sons, such as opening their own particular country's exhibits, and the cabinet's presence was necessary neces-sary to lend prestige and eclat to such a momentous occasion. The rest of Washington simply went along for the ride, being unable to think up any better excuse than that they wanted to see the fun. A special train carried members of the congress to the metropolis and brought it dutifully back to face a pretty gloomy outlook after so much carefree gayety. M |
